This is a view from the east bank of the Sumida River.
We can see the big roof of Asakusa Temple and its pagoda.
Also we can see Mt. Fuji in the distance.
The bridge over the river is Azuma Bridge.
This is the Azuma Bridge now.
But the first thing we see in this Hiroshige's picture is not the bridge, Asakusa Temple, nor Mt. Fuji.
It is the roofed boat on the Sumida River.
In Edo era, people enjoyed boating and this kind of boat was used by wealthy merchants.
A man is enjoying hanami (cherry-blossom viewing) with a beautiful Geisha.
The flower petals are falling like snow.
Mt. Fuji, cherry blossoms, Geisha...what a luxurious hanami!
I went there in the cherry blossom season.
The flowers along the Sumida River were so gorgeous.
Flower petals were falling like snow.
I enjoyed walking on the pink carpet.
Even today hanami on a boat is very popular.
I saw many boats on the river.
a pink boat
a packed boat
a house boat called Yakatabune
There were so many boats.
I tried to take a picture like Hiroshige's, with the bridge and a boat.
もっと舟を大きく撮りたかったんですけれどね。 ^_^;
Well, I wanted the boat much bigger, but this is the best I could do. ^_^;
Asakusa temple and Mt. Fuji are behind many buildings, I suppose.
By the way, we are all excited about the opening of the world's tallest free-standing broadcasting tower, Tokyo Sky Tree, the next Tuesday (May 22).
This is how it looks from the Azuma Bridge.
The golden building and adjacent one with a unique object are owned by a famous beer company, Asahi Beer.
It has restaurants and a cafe on the top floor.
Next time, I would like to explore there.
