假屋崎省吾の世界＠百段階段 The World of Shogo Kariyazaki at Hyakudan-kaidan

目黒雅叙園にある百段階段で行われた「假屋崎省吾の世界」展に行ってきました。

毎秋こちらで開かれていて今年で１５年目だそうです。

Shogo Kariyazaki is a famous Ikebana flower artist in Japan.

He is also a popular TV personality.

Every autumn, he exhibits his artwork at Hyakudan-kaidan in Meguro Gajoen. 

This year, it was held between October 1-26.

百段階段というのは１９３０年代に作られた雅叙園に残る唯一の木造建築。
百段といいながら実は９９段。
奇数のほうが縁起がいいということらしいです。

Hyakudan-kaidan is a very unique place built in the 1930s.   "Hyakudan-kaidan" means "100 steps" but actually, there are 99 steps.  (A lady explained that it was because odd number was considered luckier than even number.)

この階段の右側に７つのお座敷が並んでいます。
それぞれを高名な画家や彫刻家などが手がけ、贅を尽くしたまさに芸術品のようなお部屋です。

Along these steps are seven Japanese style banquet rooms.
Each of them is unique and super-gorgeous!
Highly-reputed artists and craftsmen of the time worked on each room. 

ところで、ここ百段階段は通常は一般公開されていません。
予約制の見学ツアーか、あるいはこのような展示会で見られるのみ。
しかも通常は写真撮影禁止。
今回初めての試みとして、トワイライト入場者のみ写真撮影が許されました。
すごいラッキーだったみたいで嬉しい！＼(^o^)／

By the way, this place is usually closed to the public.

Either you have to take a guided tour (with reservation in advance), or you have to go to one of these exhibitions.

Even then, photography is prohibited.

For the first time, evening (yes, only evening) visitors to this exhibition were permitted to take photos.

So, this was a very rare opportunity! ＼(^o^)／

一番すごかったのは漁樵（ぎょしょう）の間。

My favorite room was Gyosho-no-Ma.

着物や帯も假屋崎さんのデザインだそうです。

天井も彫刻です。　Flowers on the ceiling are also wood carved.

清方の間も素敵でした。
すべての作品が鏑木清方（1878－1972）の筆によるものです。

I also liked the room, Kiyokata-no-Ma.

Every work in this room was by Kaburaki Kiyokata (1878-1972).

二つ目の部屋は假屋崎さんの作品で埋め尽くされています。ゴージャスでした。
This great work occupies the entire second room.

でも正直言うと、自分で撮った写真を見てちょっとがっかりしています。
実際はもっとずっと素晴らしかったのに。
光や影、音や香り、そういったものすべてが「假屋崎省吾の世界」だったんでしょうね。
来年はぜひいかがですか？

But to tell you the truth, I was disappointed when I saw my photos.  
My photos don't show even half of what it was like being there.
Light, shadow, sound and smell...
Together, they make "The World Of Shogo Kariyazaki."
I hope you can experience it yourself next year.

大洗サンビーチで海水浴 Oarai Sun Beach

毎日暑いですね！

茨城の大洗サンビーチへ久しぶりに行ってきました。

ここは遠浅の海に波もちょうどいいくらい、我が家のお気に入りの海水浴場なんです。

Oarai Sun Beach is our favorite beach in Ibaraki.

It's the nice shallow beach, and it has nice waves.

早朝に家を出て、8時前にはビーチに到着。

まだ人出もそれほどではありません。

Last Sunday, tired of this hot weather, we escaped to the beach.

We started early and got there before 8 AM.

So it wasn't crowded. 

水は冷たくて気持ちいい。心地よい風も吹いています。

Pleasantly cool water and nice breeze.

だんだん人が増えてきました。

But soon it got very crowded.

でも海はひろくて、ただただ気持ちいい。

Still, the ocean is big enough for all the people.

I enjoyed it very much.

沖まで泳いで浜辺のほうを見ると、色とりどりのパラソルやテントがまるでお花畑のように見えました。

When I swam out and looked back at the beach, it looked like a colorful flower garden with all those parasols and tents.

これは海からの眺めではありませんけれど。This was not taken from the water though.

昼前にはビーチを後にし、温泉に行ってきれいになって、それから遅めの昼食です。

We left the beach before noon, went to a hot-spring bath, got clean and then had lunch.

大洗には他にアクアワールドという大きな水族館、高さ60メートルのマリンタワー、それにアウトレットモールなどもあって、楽しめます。

Besides the beach and hot springs, the town of Oarai has a big aquarium called Aqua World, 60-meter-tall Oarai Marine Tower, and outlet mall.

さらに新たに加わった魅力（？）が…

And besides all that, it looks like Oarai got another attraction.

私は全然知らなかったのですが、「ガールズ＆パンツァー」というアニメがあって、その舞台がここ大洗。

なんでも架空の大洗女子学園に通う女子高生が「戦車道」という昔の戦車を使った武道で戦うんだそうで…

Japanese animation series "Girls und Panzer" is set on this town. 

The girls go to the fictional Oarai Girls High school and

as club activities, they are practicing tank warfare, a popular martial art in the fictional world. (I think that's what I understood.)

この最近、大洗はアニメファンの「聖地」となっているようです。

Anyway, it seems Oarai has become a "Pilgrimage" spot for the fans.

マーチエキュート神田万世橋 mAAch ecute Kanda Manseibashi

秋葉原にある「マーチエキュート　神田万世橋」は

JR東日本が運営する小さくてユニークな商業施設。

去年の9月に開業したばかりですが、その建物はなんと100年以上もの歴史があります。

"MAAch ecute Kanda Manseibashi" is in Akihabara.

It's a small but unique shopping mall run by JR east.

It's new, just opened last September.

But it's also old, as the building is more than 100 years old.

その建物とは1912年開業の旧万世橋駅。駅は1943年に休止となりましたが、今でもこの上をJR中央線が走っています。

This building used to be Manseibashi Station, which opened in 1912.  

Though the station was closed in 1943, JR Chuo line still runs on top of it. 

外から見るとなるほど古い建物です。

It looks very old, doesn't it?

でも中はとってもおしゃれ。

But the shops inside are very stylish.

コーヒー、ワイン、スイーツ、お花などの小さなお店が並んでいます。

These small shops sell wine, coffee, chocolate, flowers, and so on.

夜がさらに素敵なんです。

At night, the atmosphere gets even nicer.

開業当初からある趣ある階段を上ると、

Climb up these old steps.

They are from 1912.

旧万世橋駅のホームに出られます。

And you come to the old platform.

電車がこのホームに止まることはありませんが、すぐ両脇を中央線の電車が走っていきます。

Of course, trains don't stop here any more, but you can see trains passing by on both sides.

さらにこのホームには展望カフェもあって。

You can even have drinks on that old platform.

両脇を電車が走っていくのを眺めながらお酒をいただくことができます。

八海山ビール。日本酒の品ぞろえも豊富なようでした。

I had Hakkaisan Beer.  They have good selections of Sake, too.

さすが中央線。電車はひっきりなしに走っていきます。

忙しい電車を見ながら、のんびりビールを飲むのはなんだか気持ちよかったです。

Chuo Line is a very busy line, so trains were constantly passing by.

It was a lot of fun drinking leisurely, looking at busy trains.

さて、いい気持ちになったところで、おうちに帰りましょう。

秋葉原駅に向かいます。

It was time to go home.

Feeling happy, we headed back to Akihabara Station.

ところが、目の前には…＼(◎o◎)／！

Then, I turned around, and... ＼(◎o◎)／！　

秋葉原の街はぎらぎらです！

Akihabara is so bright and loud!!

あまりのギャップにびっくりしました。

秋葉原。面白い街ですね。

でも個人的にはやはりマーチエキュートのほうが好みかな？(^^)

It was so different!

Akihabara is such an interesting place.

But to be honest, I like mAAch ecute better.　(^^)

放生寺で放生会 Hojo-e Ceremony at Hosho-ji Temple

放生会ってご存知でしょうか？

広重の作品の中に放生会が出てきて、私は初めて知りました。

（この作品は次回ご紹介しますね。）

放生会とは文字通り「生き物を放す」ということ。

毎年8月15日江戸の人々は鳥、魚、亀などの生き物を買い集めて逃がしてやり、日常の罪を清め、生き物に感謝したんだそうです。

Until recently, I didn't know anything about Hojo-e ceremony.

But one of Hiroshige's work is about this ceremony (it will be my next post), and I learned that it was a common custom among Edo people.

"Hojo" writes "放生" in Japanese and it means "releasing life." 

On August 15th, they bought little animals, such as birds, fish, or turtles from vendors and released them.  

It was to remember and thank all the animals who gave their life to us.

西早稲田にある、その名も放生寺では、なんと今でも毎年体育の日に放生会を行っているとか。

というわけで、行ってみることにしました。

This custom is long gone, I thought.

But I learned that a temple in Nishi-Waseda, Hosho-ji temple, still holds this ceremony, not on the 15th of August, but on the second Monday in October.

I decided to attend the ceremony.

 放生寺　Hosho-ji Temple

1641年高田八幡（穴八幡宮）の別当寺として開創。
徳川将軍家の崇信も厚く、「威盛院　光松山　放生寺」という寺号は1649年三代将軍家光がくださったものだとか。

The temple was established in 1641.
It was worshipped by Tokugawa Shoguns.  
In fact, the name Hosho-ji was given by the third Shogun Iemitsu in 1649.

法要はこの本殿で行われました。

The ceremony took place in this main hall.　

祭壇に赤い金魚2匹が泳ぐ金魚鉢を置き、5人のお坊さんが法要を行います。
途中からは参列者みんなで読経しました。（恥ずかしながら、私こんな読経は初めての経験でした！）
鐘や太鼓の音にびっくりしたのか、金魚鉢の中の金魚が大暴れ。
ちょっと心配しましたよ。

During the ceremony they set a fishbowl with two red goldfish on the alter.
Five priests, one in a yellow robe and the others in purple, sat around the alter and read a sutra, with accompanying bells and drums.

And we all read a sutra.  (I had never read a sutra that long in my life before.)
Fish in the bowl were wiggling frantically.  
I suppose they were surprised at the sound we were making.

さて、その後全員で外に出て、

Then, we all went outside.

金魚を2匹ずつ、みんなが竹樋に流していきます。
金魚はするすると池に流れて行きました。

Each of us got two little goldfish in a cup, and poured it over the bamboo gutter. The fish flowed down into the pond.

最後にお札とこんなかわいい金魚をいただいて帰りました。

They gave us a talisman and one of these goldfish. 

お寺の方の手作りだそうです。　hand-made goldfish for us to take home

始めは単に好奇心から参加した放生会でしたが、参加して本当によかった！
なんだかとても心が洗われたように感じました。

To tell the truth, I went there out of mere curiosity.
But in the end, I was feeling very good, kind of, cleansed.
I'm very glad I attended this ceremony.

いただいたお札と金魚は、冷蔵庫にはって眺めています。

I'm keeping the talisman and the goldfish on my refrigerator.

「いきものをたいせつに」❤

The goldfish says "Treat  animals with respect."❤
