結納 Yuino

先日長男の結納式がありました。

One of my sons is engaged and the other day, he and his fiancee had an engagement ceremony called Yuino. 

Yuino, though not as common as it used to be, is a long tradition in Japan.

Families of both sides get together to celebrate the engagement and exchange symbolic gifts in a formal way. 

場所は都内のホテル。
訪問着で出かけました。

It used to take place at the bride's home, but nowadays it can be done at other places, too.
We did it at a hotel restaurant in Tokyo.

お式では「幾久しく」という言葉が何度も使われます。
思ったよりずっと厳かで、結構緊張しました。(^^)

The ceremony goes quite formally, as follows.

The groom's father says to the bride's father,
"Thank you for your approval for this marriage. Please accept these gifts ikuhisashiku (very formal way of saying forever and ever.)"
And he offers these.

こちらから送ったセット。帯料、長熨斗、鰹節、するめ、昆布、友白髪、末広、柳樽。それぞれにいろんな意味がこめられていることを改めて知りました。

Obi (kimono sash) money, sake money, dried abalone, dried kelp, dried bonito, dried cuttlefish, fans, white thread of hemp. Each has its own meaning but they all express our wish for their happy marriage.

Then, the bride's father says to the groom's father,
"Thank you.  We accept them ikuhisashiku."

Next, the bride's father says to the groom's father,
"Thank you for your approval for this marriage. Please accept these gifts ikuhisashiku."
He offers these.
  
頂いた物は床の間に飾ってあります。袴料、長熨斗、末広、他。
Hakama (Japanese male skirt) money, dried abalone, fans.

And the groom's father says, 
"Thank you.  We accept them ikuhisashiku."

After that, the bride and the groom exchange gifts, repeating the above procedure.
So, a lot of ikuhisashiku.　(^^)

さて、お式の後は、みんなで楽しく会席料理をいただきます。
お結納にふさわしい、おめでたく美しいお料理でした。

After the ceremony, we had Kaiseki dinner.
It was very beautiful, suitable for this happy occasion.


お刺身　sashimi (Crane is a symbol of longevity.)

特に私がきれいだと思ったのは八寸のこのお皿。
これまでいただいたお料理の中で一番きれいだったと思います。

I especially liked this plate.
It was the most beautiful plate I could remember.

オシドリの中は…。　Lovebirds are the symbol of happy marriage.

素敵な結納式ができて本当にありがたいことだと思っています。

It was a beautiful, wonderful Yuino.


お嫁さんの振り袖姿を見ることができて、それも嬉しかったです。
とてもきれいでした！！

And my future daughter-in-law wore her Furisode Kimono for this ceremony.
She was soooo beautiful!

Furisode is a kimono worn by young unmarried women. The sleeves are very long. (Compare to my kimono sleeves.) And obi, a long sash about four meters long, is tied very elaborately on the back.

25景目黒元不二 View 25 Moto-Fuji in Meguro

今の代官山あたりから、西を望む絵です。

遠くには白い富士山。

近景の山は元富士（不二）です。

山といっても人工のもの。いわゆる富士塚です。

This is not far from Daikanyama today.

We are looking to the west, hence white Mt. Fuji can be seen in the far distance.

The mountain in the foreground is Moto-Fuji, which actually

is not a mountain, rather, a man-made replica of Mt. Fuji.

江戸時代、富士山信仰が盛んでした。

でも、富士登山となると、なかなか大変。

そこで、人々は町に富士塚を作り、同じご利益があるようにそれに登りました。

江戸市中になんと100以上の富士塚があったそうですよ。

（そのうちの一つに登ったときのことは、ここに書いてあります。よかったらどうぞ。）

In the late Edo period, many such mini-Fuji were built.

Why?

Edo people worshiped Mt. Fuji, but it wasn't easy to go and climb the mountain.

So, people built many (more than a hundred!) mini-Fuji in the city. 

(I went to one of them and wrote about it here.) 

さて、この元富士。

1812年に作られて、高さおよそ12メートル。

江戸でも人気の富士塚でした。

というのも、目黒川を見下ろす高台にあって、本物の富士山の眺めも抜群でしたから。

Built in 1812 and 12 meters tall, Moto-Fuji was one of the most popular mini-Fuji in Edo.

It was on the bluff overlooking Meguro River, and it offered splendid view of the real Fuji.

元富士と呼ばれるようになったのにはわけがあって、1819年すぐ近くにもう一つ富士塚が作られたから。

こちらが元富士、あちらが新富士というわけです。

Moto-Fuji literally means "Original Fuji."  

It was called "original" because in 1819, another mini-Fuji was built nearby, which was called "Shin-Fuji (New Fuji)."

残念ながらこの元富士は1878年に取り壊され、その跡地に案内板が残されているのみ。

Sadly, Moto-Fuji was dismantled in 1878.

Only a guide plate says it was once here.

 

跡地は高級マンションになっています。The place is now a luxurious condominium.

富士山は…見えないです！Can I see Mt. Fuji from there?  No!　(>_<)

マンションの高層に住んでいたら、もしかしたら見えるのかな？確かに眺めはよさそうです。

But you might be able to see it if you are living up there.　They sure seem to be enjoying a good view.

元富士にあった石碑は、近くの上目黒氷川神社に移されているそうです。

I learned that a stone monument from Moto-Fuji is now kept in Kami-Meguro Hikawa Shrine.

目黒富士登山もできるようになっています。

 And they made mini-Fuji climbing course there.

元富士の跡を追ってきましたが、まだ広重の絵のような一枚は撮れていません。

I've followed the trace of Moto-Fuji, but I haven't taken any photo that I can compare with Hiroshige's print.

Where can I take it?

でも大丈夫。今回はちょっとしたアイデアが。　(^^)

I sort of had an idea.  (^^)

上目黒氷川神社の前の大きな通りの向こう側に大橋ジャンクションがあります。

Not far from Kami-Meguro Hikawa Shrine, just across a big street, is this unique structure.

そこが目黒天空庭園となっているのはご存知でしょうか？
大橋ジャンクションを覆う屋根の上を緑化した公園で、2013年3月にオープンした時は、ニュースでもさかんに取り上げられていました。
前から行ってみたいと思っていたのですが、今回ついに実現しました。

It's called Meguro Sky Garden.
It is a garden park constructed on a sloping roof that covers the intersection of expressways.
When it opened in March 2013, it was a big topic.
Finally, I get to visit there.

公園は緑で覆われていました。

There are many trees,

畑もありました。

and even vegetable garden,

運動場も　athletic field, too

元富士のように、この公園からの景色も西に開けています。
一番高いところには富士山の見える展望台もあるんですよ。

Just like Moto-Fuji, this park has a good view toward west.
And on the top of the park is the deck where you can see Mt. Fuji. 

ということは、本日の一枚はそこからのお写真ということで。

So, it must be the place for the photo of the day.
Let's compare.

残念！こちらの方角のはずですが、その日は富士山は見えませんでした。
でもこの天空庭園、なんとなく「現代の元富士」と言ってもいい気がしますがどうでしょう？　＼(^o^)／

Oh, well...this must be the right direction, but I couldn't see Mt. Fuji that day.
But I think this unique structure in Meguro can be said, in some ways, today's Moto-Fuji in Meguro. ＼(^o^)／

お弁当箱 Bento Box

夫が仕事にお弁当を持っていきたいと言い出したのは先月のこと。

「ええっ？どうして食堂で食べるのやめるの？？？食堂で食べようよ～」と頑張ってみましたが…。

「忙しくてゆっくり食べる時間がない」とかの理由で、結局お弁当作りが始まりました。

でもいやいやなので、申し訳ないほどに惨めなお弁当。(>_<)

Last month, my husband said he wanted to bring lunch to his work and asked me hesitantly if I could make Bento (box lunch) for him.

"What?? Why don't you want to eat at the cafeteria any more?" I asked desperately.

He said he's too busy to go to the cafeteria, and that's how I started making Bento for him.

But my reluctant Bento looked terrible!  (>_<)

やる気を出すためには形から！

というわけで新しいお弁当箱を探しに行きました。

びっくりするくらい本当にいろんなお弁当箱がありました。

そこで見つけたお気に入り＼(^o^)／

I went to look for a new Bento box.

I was amazed at the variety of Bento boxes in the store.

And I fell in love with this.　＼(^o^)／

 いい感じ！  Looks good!

合成漆器ということで、残念ながら食洗機は使えない。そこ、かなり迷いましたが、でも、いいんです。自分で洗います。
It's not a real lacquer work, but looks like one.  The only problem is that it's not dishwasher safe.  But I decided I can manage that. 

蓋をあけると2段になっています。Inside are two containers stacked up. 

One for rice and the other one for variety of side dishes

このお弁当箱にお弁当を詰めるのが楽しみです。
でもさて、続くかな～？

Now, I'm looking forward to filling this Bento box.
But for how long?  I'm not sure.

明けましておめでとうございます A Happy New Year!

お久しぶりです！

まるで冬眠中(?)かのようにすっかりご無沙汰でしたが、元気に忙しくしておりました。

実家松山に帰ったり、甥っこの結婚式があったり、初めての鼓童コンサートに行ったり、それからクリスマス、お正月…。

忙しくて、楽しかった！

Long time no see!

Maybe you were wondering if I was hibernating.　(^_-)

Well, I was just enjoying my every day life, visiting my parents in Matsuyama, attending my nephew's wedding, going to Kodo concert for the first time, Christmas, and New Year's get-together.

さて、今年もお節は頑張って作りました。

Every year for the New Year, I make a traditional Japanese  food called Osechi.

It's in wooden boxes called Jubako.

My Jubako is three-tier boxes.

今年はけっこううまく盛り付けられたんじゃないかと、自分では気にいっています。(^^)

I'm quite happy with this year's Osechi. (^^)

假屋崎省吾の世界＠百段階段 The World of Shogo Kariyazaki at Hyakudan-kaidan

目黒雅叙園にある百段階段で行われた「假屋崎省吾の世界」展に行ってきました。

毎秋こちらで開かれていて今年で１５年目だそうです。

Shogo Kariyazaki is a famous Ikebana flower artist in Japan.

He is also a popular TV personality.

Every autumn, he exhibits his artwork at Hyakudan-kaidan in Meguro Gajoen. 

This year, it was held between October 1-26.

百段階段というのは１９３０年代に作られた雅叙園に残る唯一の木造建築。
百段といいながら実は９９段。
奇数のほうが縁起がいいということらしいです。

Hyakudan-kaidan is a very unique place built in the 1930s.   "Hyakudan-kaidan" means "100 steps" but actually, there are 99 steps.  (A lady explained that it was because odd number was considered luckier than even number.)

この階段の右側に７つのお座敷が並んでいます。
それぞれを高名な画家や彫刻家などが手がけ、贅を尽くしたまさに芸術品のようなお部屋です。

Along these steps are seven Japanese style banquet rooms.
Each of them is unique and super-gorgeous!
Highly-reputed artists and craftsmen of the time worked on each room. 

ところで、ここ百段階段は通常は一般公開されていません。
予約制の見学ツアーか、あるいはこのような展示会で見られるのみ。
しかも通常は写真撮影禁止。
今回初めての試みとして、トワイライト入場者のみ写真撮影が許されました。
すごいラッキーだったみたいで嬉しい！＼(^o^)／
（假屋崎さんありがとうございます！！）

By the way, this place is usually closed to the public.

Either you have to take a guided tour (with reservation in advance), or you have to go to one of these exhibitions.

Even then, photography is prohibited.

For the first time, evening (yes, only evening) visitors to this exhibition were permitted to take photos.

So, this was a very rare opportunity! ＼(^o^)／

一番すごかったのは漁樵（ぎょしょう）の間。

My favorite room was Gyosho-no-Ma.

すごい彫刻で埋め尽くされた室内とそれに負けない假屋崎さんの作品

着物や帯も假屋崎さんのデザインだそうです。
kimono and obi are also designed by Shogo Kariyazaki

天井も彫刻です。　Flowers on the ceiling are also wood carved.

清方の間も素敵でした。
すべての作品が鏑木清方（1878－1972）の筆によるものです。

I also liked the room, Kiyokata-no-Ma.

Every work in this room was by Kaburaki Kiyokata (1878-1972).

二つ目の部屋は假屋崎さんの作品で埋め尽くされています。ゴージャスでした。
This great work occupies the entire second room.

  草丘の間　（磯部草丘）ハロウィーンに合いますね！
Sokyu-no-Ma by Isobe Sokyu　 Halloween arrangement matches the room very well!



でも正直言うと、自分で撮った写真を見てちょっとがっかりしています。
実際はもっとずっと素晴らしかったのに。
光や影、音や香り、そういったものすべてが「假屋崎省吾の世界」だったんでしょうね。
来年はぜひいかがですか？

But to tell you the truth, I was disappointed when I saw my photos.  
My photos don't show even half of what it was like being there.
Light, shadow, sound and smell...
Together, they make "The World Of Shogo Kariyazaki."
I hope you can experience it yourself next year.
