How the Local Enjoy Dogo Onsen 地元的道後温泉の楽しみ方

道後温泉の歴史は古く、万葉集や源氏物語にも出てきます。

古くから多くの天皇皇后が訪れたようで596年には聖徳太子も来訪したとか。

Dogo Onsen (hot spring) has a long history.  It is mentioned in  Manyo-shu (poetry collection between fifth to eighth century) and also in the famous Tale of Genji.
Record tells that many Emperors and Empresses visited here, including Prince Shotoku in 596.

これが1894年完成の道後温泉本館。

城大工が作ったそうですが、まさにお城のようですね。


This is Dogo Onsen Main Bath House.
It was built in 1894 by castle carpenters.  
Yes, it looks like a castle.

すだれをかけて夏らしい装いになっていました。


Sudare　(bamboo blinds) are added to prepare for summer.

皇室専用の浴室があるんですよ。

又新殿（ゆうしんでん）といって、使用中でなければ（そして前回使用されたのは60年前だとか）見学可です。

It has Yushin-den, a bathroom exclusively for Japanese Imperial Family.
Unless it is used (and the last time it was used was more than 60 years ago), the tour is available.

近くにある伊佐爾波（いさにわ）神社も1000年の歴史があります。

この階段の上です。

Isaniwa Shrine nearby has also a long history of 1000 years.
But these steps... 

現在の社殿は江戸時代に松山藩主松平定長（1640～1674）が建てたものだそうで、とっても豪華です。

The current building was built in Edo era, by the feudal lord Sadanaga Matsudaira (1640-1674).

It is gorgeous.

さて観光客でにぎわう道後温泉ですが、地元の人もよく利用します。

Dogo Onsen attracts many people from all over the country, but also the local people enjoy it, too.

たとえば私の父。道後温泉本館で朝風呂です。

道後温泉本館は朝6時に太鼓を打ち鳴らして開館するんですよ。

Take, for example, my father.  He enjoys taking a morning bath at Dogo Onsen Main Bath House.  

It opens at 6 AM with its famous drumming. 

一方姉はたくさんある旅館やホテルのランチ巡りを楽しんでいるようです。

旅館によってはお部屋でお食事をいただいて、お風呂にも入れる日帰りプランがあります。

たとえば以前に私も行ったことがあるのが、ここ古湧園。

よかったですよ。

My sister enjoys visiting ryokan and hotels in the area for lunch.

Some ryokan offer a day plan, with which you can have lunch in the ryokan room, relax for a while and enjoy Onsen.

I have been to Kowaku-en. (this page is in Japanese, but you can see the pictures of the food and the price.)  It was great.

でも今回はもっとお手軽に温泉を楽しむことに。

But this time, my sister and I went for more reasonable price.

食事の後、お風呂にも入ってたったの1000円！タオルまでつきます。

The lunch and Onsen for only 1000 yen, a towel included!

お風呂の中では地元の人の伊予弁に耳を傾けながら、ゆっくりお湯の中で身体をほぐすことができました。

お風呂大好きです＼(^o^)／

I soaked myself in a big hot bath, relaxed, listening to the chatting of the people in the Iyo dialect.

I am an Onsen lover! ＼(^o^)／

A Haiku Post on a Streetcar in Matsuyama 市電に俳句ポスト

松山にはかわいらしい市電が走っています。

Matsuyama maintains the streetcar system.

小さいですが、とても便利です。

なんだか懐かしい、のんびりした電車です。

The car is small, but it is very convenient.

It has a nostalgic feel and it doesn't hurry. 

そして電車の中で私がみつけたのは…

前回もご紹介した俳句ポスト！こんなところにもありました。

ちゃんと用紙と鉛筆が添えられています。

一句思いついたらすぐその場で投函できますよ。

It even is equipped with a pencil and paper.

If a haiku pops up in your mind in a streetcar, you can mail it right away.

ところでおよそ１時間に１度、この市電を坊っちゃん列車が走っています。

明治２１年から６７年間活躍した蒸気機関車をモデルにして２００１年に復活しました。

By the way, about once an hour, a special street car "Bocchan Ressha" runs the route.

Modeled after the steam train that ran for 67 years since 1888, it was built in 2001.

名前の由来は夏目漱石の小説「坊ちゃん」。

漱石は松山で英語教師をしたことがあります。

後にその経験をもとに「坊ちゃん」を著しました。

The train was named after a novel "Bocchan" by Soseki Natsume.

Soseki once was an English teacher in Matsuyama and later wrote this novel based on his experiences in Matsuyama.

小説の中で都会育ちの坊ちゃんは道後温泉に行こうと列車に乗り込みます。

「乗り込んでみるとマッチ箱のような汽車だ。ごろごろと五分ばかり動いたと思ったらもうおりなければならない。道理で切符が安いと思った。たった三銭である。」

このフレーズは私が幼いころさんざんコマーシャルで流されていたので、多くの松山人がそらで言えるのではないでしょうか？

In the novel, the city-bred Bocchan gets into a train to go to Dogo Onsen.

"The train was like a match-box.  It went slowly for about five minutes and already I had to get off.  No wonder the fare was so cheap.  It was only three sen."

This phrase is so famous in Matsuyama　because it was repeated on TV commercials.  I think many people can recite it by heart.

坊っちゃん列車に乗って道後温泉に行くのも楽しいですよ。

It's fun to go to Dogo Onsen on Bocchan Ressha.

Matsuyama Castle 松山城へ行ってきました

しばらく実家のある松山に行っていました。

I was back to my home town Matsuyama for a while.

松山は「いで湯と城と文学のまち。」

いで湯というのは温泉。

市内にある道後温泉は日本で最古の温泉と言われています。

そして正岡子規などを輩出した文学の町でもあります。

今でも俳句が盛んで、市内には９０か所もの俳句ポストがあるんですよ。

The city proudly calls itself

 "The city of hot springs, castle and literature."

As for hot springs, it has Japan's oldest hot spring bath house, Dogo Onsen.

And for the literature, it's the city of haiku (the shortest poem in the world.) 

A famous haiku poet, Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) is from this city.

Haiku is still very popular.  You can tell it from the fact that there are 90 haiku-posts (mailboxes that you can send haiku) in the city.

そして、松山城。

And it has Matsuyama Castle.

Matusyama Castle is on the top of a mountain surrounded by the flat Matsuyama Plain.

毎日松山城を見上げながら育った私ですが、お城には長い間行っていませんでした。

久しぶりに行ってきました。

Even though I grew up looking up at the castle every day, I wasn't up there for a long time.

So, I decided to visit the castle.

お城には歩いても、リフト、ロープウェイを使っても行けます。

ちょっとなまけてリフトを使いました。たった６分間で上がれました。

You can walk or use either a lift or a cable car.

I was lazy.  I went on the lift. It only took 6 minutes

お城には正岡子規の句碑がありました。

松山や

秋より高き

天守閣

句碑の横には俳句ポストが。

いい句が浮かんだら、このポストに入れましょう。

On the mountain, there is a stone tablet inscribed with a haiku by Masaoka Shiki. 


It says...

Matuyama-ya

Akiyori Takaki 

Tenshukaku

It means something like

"Matsuyama,

Higher than the autumn sky

the castle tower soaring"

Next to it is the "haiku-post."

If a haiku pops up in your mind, you can scribble it on the attached paper and put it in the box.

石垣の高さは１７メートルもあります。

Stone walls are about 17 meters tall.

これが本丸。

This is the main bailey.

久しぶりでしたが、あらためてきれいなお城だと思いました。


I took it for granted when I was living in Matsuyama. 
But this time, I found it very beautiful.






ところでロープウェイ乗り場近くのお土産物屋さんで有名な今治タオルを購入しました。

「やわらかさ日本一　　雲ごこちタオル」

本当に雲のようにふわふわで気持ちいいです。

By the way, I stopped by a souvenir shop right near the cable car gate and got the famous Imabari Towels there.

"The softest towel in Japan   Kumo-gokochi"
Kumo-gokochi means something like "as if in a fluffy cloud"

I'm loving it!
