３５景真乳山山谷堀夜景 View35 Night View of Mt. Macchi and Sanya channel

向島の芸者が隅田川の川岸を歩いています。

お座敷帰りでしょうか、芸者の足もとを照らす提灯が見えます。

木版画ならではの木目もいい感じですね。

A geisha in the Mukojima district is walking along the east bank of the Sumida River.

A lantern, shown partly on the far left, is guiding her way.  Probably, she has just finished her work at a tea house. 

The wood grain showing in the black sky adds to the charm of this picture, I think.

対岸に見える小高い山が真乳山でその頂上には聖天宮がありました。

今は待乳山聖天といってこんな感じです。

A little mountain on the other side is Mt. Macchi, on the top of which there is a shrine called Macchi-zan Shoten.

This is the shrine today.

隅田川に流れ込んでいるのが山谷堀です。

有名な遊郭吉原はその先にありました。江戸の人たちは隅田川を船で上ってきて、ここで船をおり、吉原へむかったそうです。

堀の両側には船宿や料理屋の明かりが見えますね。

The channel flowing into the Sumida River is Sanya Channel.

Yoshiwara, the famous red-light district in the Edo period, was not far from here.

The Edo people came up the Sumida River by a boat, got off here, and headed for Yoshiwara.

On both side of the channel, we can see the light of boathouses and restaurants.

さて、私が向島へ行ったのは４月の中旬でした。桜が満開！

I went to Mukojima in the middle of April.  

Cherry blossoms were in full bloom.

なんとラッキーなことに

And I was so lucky.

花見客のために向島の芸者さんたちがお茶屋さんを開いてくれていました。

芸者さんに会えるなんてなかなかないですよね。

笑顔が素敵で、しかもとっても気さくなんです。

感激しました。

Geisha in the Mukojima district were serving tea for us visitors.

Usually it's not easy to see geisha, so I felt soooo lucky.

They were beautiful and also very friendly.

ちなみにいただいたのはきび団子、５００円也。

おっと！写真を撮る前にちょっと食べちゃいました。

I had kibi-dango and tea for 500 yen.

さてそれでは広重のように隅田川の川岸から真乳山のほうを見てみましょう。

Now, like Hiroshige, let's stand at the riverbank and look toward  Mt. Macchi.

芸者さんに写真に入ってもらえたら最高だったんですけど、さすがにそれはね。

ちょうど９１景で紹介した平成中村座の芝居小屋が立っているあたりでした。

It would have been wonderful if I could get a geisha in this photo.

But it's too much to ask for, right?

On the other side, I saw the Kabuki theater Nakamura-za, which I mentioned in my earlier post on View 91.

でもよく見ると、中村座の奥に待乳山聖天の屋根が見えました。

Behind the theater, I could see the roofs of the shrine.
