Dragons at Kennin-ji Temple

Kennin-ji Temple is in Gion, one of the most famous entertainment districts in Kyoto.

Crest of Gion, Kushi-dango
Hanami-koji Street and Maiko-san

Kennin-ji Temple is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto, founded in 1202.

I went there to see dragons.

This is the artwork by a painter, Junsaku KOIZUMI (1924-2012) who has passed away in January this year.
"Twin Dragons" are on the ceiling of the main hall, Hatto.
It's huge, the size of 108 tatami (11.4m × 15.7m.)
One is going "a (open mouth)" and the other one is going "un(closed mouth)."

Imagine, you are under bright (hot!) sun.
And then, you enter the dark hall, and above you are these enormous dragons, looking down on you!
I felt chilly.

It was installed in April, 2002 to commemorate the 800-year anniversary of the temple.

I also met another dragons.
This is Fusuma (sliding door) painting by Kaiho Yusho (1533-1615) called "Cloud Dragon."

This famous painting by Tawaraya Sotasu (17th century) belong to this temple, too.

Raijin (God of Thunder) on the left  and Fujin (God of Wind) on the right

We could sit in a very big tatami room and enjoy the view of the nice garden and pleasant breeze.

But they are under some reconstruction, so we couldn't see its famous gardens, Daiouen and ○△□garden.
○△□?  Sounds very Zen, doesn't it?

They say the reconstruction will go on for a couple more years.

So, there always are good reasons to visit Kyoto, again and again.(^_^)

Fushimi Inari Taisha

I went to Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto.

Established in 711, Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head of all the 30,000+ Inari Shrines throughout Japan.

It's famous for these torii.

A lot of them!!

Wow, beautiful!  There are more than 5,000 torii in total.
They are donated by individuals or corporations, and their names are on the back of each torii.

Fushimi Inari Taisha sits at the base of a mountain called Mt. Inari.  There are several shrines in the mountain. You follow the torii, and tour these shrines.
Does this hand-written map give you some idea?

From medieval times, people visited these shrines in Mt. Inari.

Seisho Nagon(966-1017), a court lady in Heian period, wrote in her famous book, "The Pillow Book."  One day in February, she visited Mt. Inari.  She wanted to go to the shrine on the top, but it was so hard climbing the mountain.  She was so hot and she wanted to cry.

Well, if she was so hot and wanted to cry in February, what about me climbing there in AUGUST??

Up! 上って
Down! 下がって
Up again!!

I was crying my eyes out!  I was melting and evaporating!!
\(◎o◎)/
(But these pictures don't show how hot it was, do they?)

Each shrine has these interesting mounds behind it.
The mountain is filled with mystic air.

And let me just show you proudly, this is the shrine on the top.
(^_^)v

Many of you may already know that foxes are the messengers of Inari.  So, at Fushimi Inari, you can see many foxes.

a very dynamic fox at the entrance
Water comes down from his mouth...but it must be hard for him
fox with a key
fox with ears of rice

It was soooo hot, but it was a nice interesting shrine.

Kyoto Ponto-cho

I was in Kyoto last week.
Kyoto is known for its hot summer and cold winter.

But I didn't expect 37.00℃! (+o+)

The Kamo River was dazzling in the daytime.

But it looks different when the sun sets.

During summer (between June and September) restaurants along the river (about 90 of them) provide outdoor riverside dining on their wooden patios.    It is called Kawayuka.

To enjoy Kawayuka dinner, we went to Ponto-cho.
Ponto-cho is one of  the five entertainment districts in Kyoto.
(They are Gion, Miyagawa-cho, Kami-shichiken, Gion-higashi, and Ponto-cho.)
If you are lucky, you might be able to see real Maiko walking along the street.

Crest of Ponto-cho, Chidori

This is where we had Kawayuka dinner and cold beer.

Food was good.
Wind was cool.
Lit lanterns made our hearts warm and happy.

The bright full moon came up from the edge of the mountain.
It was a wonderful night.
