Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building

I went to see the newly refurbished Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building.

Beautiful, isn't it?

Please compare these two pictures.

9月 September

10月 October

So many people were taking pictures!

This building was built in 1914, but was badly damaged during WWⅡ.
I am happy that it is restored to its original design and hope it will stand there gracefully forever.
.

The Imperial Palace area is straight ahead of the station.
They have this nice, wide walkway.

I saw these beautiful flowers.

Soft, elegant cosmos and kochia.
We call kochia Hoki-gusa(broom grass) and one of my friend is very good at making a broom out of it.

Finally, autumn has come! \(^o^)/

View 8 Suruga-cho

Suruga-cho was a town close to Nihonbashi.
Streets in this area were planned so that they could have a good view of Mt. Fuji, and that's how it was named Suruga-cho, after Suruga in Shizuoka prefecture, where Mt. Fuji stands.

But I don't think they could actually see Mt. Fuji that big.  Hiroshige's design here is so wonderful, with the big Mt. Fuji above and the busy town below separated by soft clouds.

The store in the picture is Echigo-ya, one of the biggest kimono shops in Edo.

You can see the model of this store at Edo-Tokyo Museum.
Echigo-ya at Suruga-cho
You can also see the inside of  the shop.

Ehigo-ya was founded by Mitsui Takatoshi (1622-1694).
He was from Matsuzaka, Ise.  His father was a Samurai, but gave it up and started selling Miso and Sake. In 1673, Takatoshi came to Edo and started his kimono shop.  In 1683, he moved to Suruga-cho.  His sales method was quite innovative.  His pricing was honest, but non-negotiable, and he only accepted cash payment.  He sold only at his store, not at the houses of customers.  Today, these sound nothing special, but it was all started by Takatoshi.
He also started money-exchange business.

His business was a big, big success!  It prospered all through Edo period, and after Meiji, his kimono shop became Mitsukoshi Department Store, his money-exchange business, Mitsui Bank. (Sumitomo Mitsui Bank now)

Today, the main store of Mitsukoshi stands on the left side of the street.

This Renaissance-style building was built in 1935 after the Great Kanto Earthquake.
It is just so grand!
パイプオルガンもある中央ホール the main hall with a pipe organ

I didn't take many pictures inside, but really enjoyed looking at the beautiful details of the building and also beautiful things they had at the store.   I just loved the store! ❤

By the way, do you know what I found on the rooftop terrace?
Mimeguri Jinja
for someone who love kitsune(^_^)
They look noble, don't they?

And Mitsui Main Buidling stands on the right side of the street.

Mitsui Main Building

This building is also beautiful.  It was built in 1929, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property by Japanese government.  It is still the Nihonbashi branch of their bank, and also, on the seventh floor, they have Mitsui Memorial Museum.
That's another place I want to go and see.
(This time, I spent too long at the department store. ^_^;)

Well, back to Hiroshige's picture.
I stood on the street and looked toward south-west, like Hiroshige.

What would Mitsui Takatoshi think if he saw this view?
What he started in 1683 are still here, on both side of this street.

View74 Flourishing City during the Tanabata Festival

This is the first picture categorized in the "Autumn View."
These days, Tanabata festival is a summer event.  It is celebrated on various days between July and August depending on the regions.
But the Edo people celebrated it in the middle of August and considered it the beginning of autumn.  They loved to get a head start!

On Tanabata, the Edo people decorated a bamboo tree and set it up as high as they could, just like in this Hiroshige's picture.
It is said this is a view from his balcony, and the nearest bamboo is his.  I see sake cup and gourd decorations.   His wish was a lot of sake?

Look at all those bamboo trees reaching for the sky!  The city of Edo is surely flourishing!  Beyond the city, we see Mt. Fuji.  On the right, we see the watchtowers of Edo castle, too.

Well, how can I take a picture like Hiroshige's?
Hiroshige used to live near where the Bridgestone Museum is today.
(It's about 5-minute walk from Tokyo Station)
Bridgestone Corporation
They have a museum.

I stood at the entrance and looked toward west.

It doesn't look like Hiroshige's picture at all. (>_<)
I want to be somewhere higher and look over the roofs.
Where can I do that?

I decided to go and see a department store Daimaru Tokyo right outside Tokyo Station.
I went up to the 12th floor and was very pleased.
They have a nice window looking west. (^_^)v

Tokyo Station and Marunouchi area

Wow!  Look at all these platform roofs.
Roofs♪

Straight ahead, I could see the Sakashita-mon gate of the Imperial palace.

I could also see beautiful domes of the Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, which is now undergoing a massive renovation.

Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building was built in 1914.  It was a massive 3-story building with two domes in the north and south. It had an entrance and waiting rooms exclusively used by the imperial family. This building survived the Great Kanto Earthquake intact, but was badly damaged by the U.S. air raids in the WWⅡ and lost the domes. Since 2007, they have been restoring the building to its original design, and at the same time, making it a seismic isolated structure.  After five and a half years of efforts, it will be completed this coming October!

When completed, it will look like this.

It looks completed from the outside.  Beautiful!

A domed ceiling will be revealed in October.

It is said more than two million people use Tokyo Station a day. This renovation must have been such a challenge as they had to do it without stopping that flow of people.
I admire their effort.

I will definitely go and see it again in October.

Back to Hiroshige's picture.
I tried to take a picture as close to as Hiroshige's.
But what do you think?

There are no Tanabata decorations, nor Mt. Fuji.
But I think this shows the flourishing Tokyo, well, if the flourishing is not the right word in this difficult time, ganbatteru Tokyo.
At least you can see many roofs! (^_-)
