View 57 Hanashobu in Horikiri

Don't these flowers look noble and elegant?
They are hanashobu, a kind of iris.
Hiroshige placed three big flowers in the foreground, and in the distance, many flowers and some sightseers.

This is the village of Horikiri, which is now in Katsushika ward.
In the time of Edo, it was a swampy area, good for hanashobu cultivation.
There were five famous hanashobu gardens in the village, Kodaka-en, Musashi-en, Yoshino-en, Horikiri-en, and Kanka-en.
During Hanashobu season in June, a lot of Edo people took a boat up the Sumida and Ayase River and visited the place.

Now only Horikiri-en remains as Horikiri Shobuen (Horikiri Iris Garden).

Afraid to miss its best season, I headed for the place in a drizzling rain.

Horikiri Shobuen Station of Keisei Line

The garden is about 10 minutes walk from the station.
Thanks to the signs everywhere, I didn't get lost.

From June 1 to 25, they are having Shobu Festival.

Flowers were so gorgeous.

You see the red highways? The Ayase River is just beyond it.
You can see how easy it was for Edo people to come here by a boat.
But because of the highways, it was quite noisy. (>_<)

There are 200 kinds, 6000 hanashobu in the garden.
Why so many varieties?

In late Edo, breeding flowers became so popular.  Horikiri gardeners raced to produce more colorful and more exotic hanashobu.

This is the original flower.
Nohana Shobu

Then, the hybrids come in so many varieties.

It's nice they are labeled, but sorry, in Japanese. (-_-;)

I had fun looking at the flowers, looking at the names, and thinking why they got such names.

For example,

Edo Murasaki (Edo Purple)

Horikiri-no Yume (Horikiri Dream)

Ayase River

Shokko nishiki (in English, it's something like light of a candle)

Yujo-no-sugata (Image of courtesans)

 Shinso Kajin (a noble madame)

Aoinoue (the heroine of Tale of Genji)

Some have katakana names.

 Stippled Ripples
Prima Ballerina

I really enjoyed the flowers.
Also, it was fun trying to take a photo as close to Hiroshige's print as possible.
But it wasn't easy.
For example, I like the flower in this photo, but not the background.

Seisho Nagon

So, I've chosen this.

Medaka fish

Remember the big pot in my garden?
I have medaka fish in it, but during winter, it is covered with thick ice.
When we had big snow last winter, it looked like this.

Some of you wanted to know if my fish survived.

Well, my pot now looks like this.

And twenty or so medaka are swimming peacefully.

Medaka is a small fish, about 3 or 4 cm long.
They come in brown, orange or white (like mine).
They are very hardy and easy to keep.

When spring comes, they start laying tiny eggs.
Then, I have to take out the eggs into another container.
(Otherwise, they eat their eggs and babies.)

Within a few weeks, they hatch.
They are so super tiny, they are almost invisible at first.

Here's a quiz.  There are five babies in the photo below.
Can you find them?

It might be easier to look for their shadows.

答え
Here's the answer.

Little by little, they get bigger.
These are about 0.8 cm long.

When they are big enough, I put these babies back to my pot.
And the life in my pot goes on and on.

I'm enjoying it!\(^o^)/

Bocchan and Matsuyama

"Bocchan" is a famous Japanese novel written by Soseki Natsume (1867-1916).

Soseki was born and grew up in Tokyo.  After graduating, he spent a year in Matsuyama teaching English.  Later, in 1906, he wrote "Bocchan" based on this experience.

The hero of the story, Bocchan, a young man with Edokko (old Tokyo) spirit comes to a country town to teach math. The town has a good hot spring, but that's about it.  Bocchan is annoyed with curious town people and his colleagues such as Akashatsu (Red shirt) and Nodaiko (Clown) and in the end, decides to go back to Tokyo.

It's a fun story, but even so, I can't help feeling sad.
Bocchan doesn't like Matsuyama. (T_T)

Nevertheless, Matsuyama loves Bocchan.
We love the funny episodes and the unique characters in the novel.

So, we have named many things after the novel.
Bocchan Ressha (street car).

Bocchan Dango

Dogo beer Bocchan

And a lot more.  Bocchan Stadium, Bocchan Theater, Bocchan Literary Award, etc.

これは、

This is ...

Okonomiyaki Restaurant Soseki

Soseki Natsume

This is my favorite Okonomiyaki restaurant in Matsuyama.
They have been in business for more than 40 years.

Look at their menu.

Bocchan (pork) ¥590
Madonna (shrimp) ¥640
Yamaarahi (beef)  ¥670 ...
Names are all related to the novel.  Isn't that fun?

It is located right in front of the Matsuyama City Station.
If you are looking for some reasonable, good restaurant in Matsuyama, this is a place for you.
(You can make Okonomiyaki yourself, or they can make it for you.)

By the way, do you remember Barysan, the champion of the Yuru-kyara Grand Prix 2012?  They opened Barysan Land on the seventh floor of Takashimaya Department Store.
Okonomiyaki Restaurant Soseki is very close to it.
Meet this big Barysan after your Okonomiyaki. (^^)

Issho-ni Shashin Toroya (let's have a picture taken together.)
