Climbing a miniature Mt. Fuji

Today, July 1, is Mt. Fuji's yamabiraki day (the first day of climbing season).
As Mt. Fuji was designated as a World Heritage site just this June, it was a big news this morning on TV.
They said some people climb Mt. Fuji with little preparation and it can be fatal.
Mt. Fuji from Jukkoku-toge

Yes, I can imagine, it's not easy to climb Mt. Fuji.
But I know much easier way.  So did the people of Edo.
It's called Fuji-zuka.(^^)

Fuji-zuka are man-made miniature Fuji, most of which were built in the Edo period.
Those days, people worshiped Mt. Fuji and it was their dream to climb Mt. Fuji.
But it was far away.  It was dangerous.  Not anyone could do that.
So, instead, they built miniature Fuji in their community.
It is said there were more than a hundred Fuji-zuka in Edo.
Some remain, and some don't.

Today, I went to climb one of them, which is in Ono Terusaki Shrine in Taito ward.

This Fuji-zuka is open to public only two days a year, June 30 and July 1.
It's a very special occasion.
Ono Terusaki Shrine

This is Fuji-zuka.
It's about 6 meters tall and 15 meters in diameter.
It's rockier than I imagined.
I learned they brought rocks from Mt. Fuji by boat and built this in 1828.

Now. let's start climbing!

This marks the fourth station.   Phew! Six more to go!

Hooray!  I came to the top!

Taking pictures along the way, it took me about three minutes to climb that Mt. Fuji. \(^o^)/

Now, let's explore the shrine itself.
This is the main shrine.
They had bamboo decorations for coming Tanabata day.

Ono Terusaki Shrine was established in 852, first in Ueno.
Later, it was relocated to this present site.
I was surprised to learn that this building was built in 1866.
It survived Great Kanto Earthquake and WWⅡ!

This shrine is good for academic and artistic achievements.
It enshrines a real person Ono-no Takamura.
He was a scholar and poet in early Heian period.
One of his waka poem is in Hyakunin Isshu.

My favorite blogger, Tall Gary translated this as follows (I hope he doesn't mind);

You there, boatman!
Tell her I'm being shipped out

On the wilderness of the sea
Cast off

Chino-wa kuguri ceremony was being held.

This is another little shrine for Inari and Orihime.

It was an interesting shrine.

Matsumoto Castle

In Japan, we have over 60 castles with Tenshu (main tower) today.
Out of them, four are designated as National Treasure of Japan. They are Himeji, Hikone, Inuyama and Matsumoto.
Last month,  I visited one of them, Matsumoto Castle in Nagano.
Tenshu (main tower) and big moat

This castle was built in early 1590s.  It was the time when many provincial lords kept fighting each other for their territories.

It looks very beautiful, but no king nor princess lived there.
Tenshu was the building for fighting.

So, it is very plain inside.

The third floor doesn't even have a window.

It's dark.

Their stairways are so steep and narrow. (They rise at a 55 to 61 degrees incline.)
The steepest steps rise about 40 cm each.
I was afraid I might tumble down.
 It's far from being barrier-free.

This is the top floor, the sixth floor.
It was very crowded.

You can enjoy the panoramic 360 degree view.

They could spot their enemy easily. You can see the snow-covered Japan Alps, too.

Later, in the Edo period, when peace was brought throughout Japan, two turrets were added to the structure.
They have a different, elegant feel.

Tsukimi-yagura turret, which overlooks the moat, was for moon viewing.
It is said people could admire three moons;
one in the sky, one in the moat, and one in your sake cup.
What a peaceful joy! (^^)

It's a wonderful castle.  But if you are going, you had better build up your physique first. (^_-)

View 41 Ichigaya Hachiman Shrine

Hiroshige is just outside Ichigaya Gate, standing on the embankment  that crosses Sotobori (Outer Moat of Edo Castle).
The town ahead looks like a busy place.  In fact, it was one of the most popular entertainment spots in Edo.
Up on the hill, behind the steep steps and dark torii, stands the  big red building of Ichigaya Hachiman Shrine.

Ichigaya Gate is long gone.  But this old photo shows how it looked.

It's now JR Ichigaya Station.

I got off a train at the station and headed for the shrine.
This is the bridge today.

広々とした外堀 nice view of the moat

The view of Ichigaya Station from the other side

The shrine is hidden behind tall buildings.
I almost missed this narrow entrance.

But once you enter, the atmosphere changes dramatically.

Look at these steep steps!

Halfway up the steps on the left is Cha-no-ki Inari Shrine.

This Inari Shrine is older than Hachiman Shrine, with a history of more than 1000 years.

This shrine is, most notably, for the people with eye troubles.
Why?
Long time ago, a white fox in this hill, a messenger of the god, got a poke in the eye with a tea plant (cha-no-ki).  Because of that, it became a custom among worshipers not to take tea for the first three days of the new year.  Later, people with eye troubles started making an oath not to take tea for 17 or 21 days, and it is said their eyes were cured.
My eyes are tired these days.  Maybe I should have made that oath. (>_<)

Now let's go up to Ichigaya Hachiman Shrine.

This copper torii was in Hiroshige's print.  It was built in 1804.

Hachimangu

Ota Dokan, the founder of Edo Castle, established this shrine in 1479 as a west-side guardian of  Edo Castle.
First, it was located inside Ichigaya Gate, but it was relocated to the present site around 1636.
The god here was brought from the famous Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura.
So, people started calling this shrine Kamegaoka Hachimangu.
(Tsuru=crane and  Kame=turtle  are often paired in Japan.
Both are the symbol of longevity.)
Now, it's become their official name; Ichigaya Kamegaoka Hachimangu.

With a theater and many tea stalls in its premises, it was a very busy shrine in the time of Edo.
But now, it's very quiet.

Now, let's go  back to the bridge and take the photo of the day.

Though hidden behind tall buildings, the shrine is still there, peacefully and quietly.

This old photo shows the bridge, the town and the shrine on the hill.
It's just like Hiroshige's print. (^^)
