Shops in Kappabashi かっぱ橋道具街に寄り道

お料理はお好きでしょうか？

お好きな方も、そうでない方も、かっぱ橋道具街はおすすめです。
浅草から歩いても１５分もかからないと思いますよ。

Are you a good chef?
If you are, (and even if you are not,) it might be fun to visit Kappabashi Street.
It's not so far from Asakusa, just 15 minutes walk, I think.




かっぱ橋道具街にはプロ仕様のキッチン用品を扱う専門店がたくさん並んでいます。
洋食器屋さん、和食器屋さん、製菓道具のお店、調理道具のお店、エプロンやコック帽、提灯を扱うお店などなど。

Kappabashi Street is a place full of restaurant supply stores.
Each store has its own speciality; dishes, furnitures, aprons and hats, baking utensils, cooking utensils, lanterns and so on.




ここで道具を揃えればプロ並みのそば打ちになれる（かも）。

If you want to become a master of Soba noodles, this is the place to go.

包丁屋さん。大きいのから小さいのまで、形もさまざまな包丁がぎっしり並んでいてびっくり。

A shop full of cutlery, big and small, all kinds!

ここは楽しい食品サンプルのお店。

本物そっくりで、いつまで見ていてもあきません。
ただ、値段も高くて、それにもびっくり。

This is a shop that has super-real plastic display food.
It's so fun to see them.
They look so real, but are quite expensive.

マグネットや携帯ストラップは買いやすいお値段。

しかも使い道もあるし。

These magnets and straps are more affordable, and more useful.

ところでもうすぐ第２８回かっぱ橋道具まつり が開かれるそうですよ。

１０月４日～１０日　AM１０時～PM５時
抽選会やワゴンセールもあるとか。

They are having their 28th Kappabashi Festival soon.
It's October 4-10, from 10AM to 5PM.
You might be able to find some good burgain!




昨年、私はかっぱ橋で包丁をゲット。
よく切れて、しかも美しい。
お料理のやる気もアップ

Last year, I bought a knife in Kappabashi.
It's very sharp and also beautiful.
I really love my knife!　

ところで、やっと涼しくなってきましたね。

あの長くて、暑くて、湿度の高かった夏が終わって本当に嬉しい！

By the way, it's finally getting cooler in Tokyo area.
I'm glad that long, hot, humid summer is over.


というわけで、昨日はおでんを作りました。
この秋初めてのおでんです。
秋が来たお祝いです。

So, I cooked Oden yesterday.
(Oden is a popular winter food in Japan.)
It was the first Oden this fall.
Just to celebrate the coming of the beautiful autumn!

100景 浅草金龍山 Asakusa Kinryuzan

有名な浅草寺です。　
江戸で一番古く、その歴史は６４５年までさかのぼるとのこと。

雷門のところから宝蔵門、その右手の五重の塔を見た絵です。

建物の赤と雪の白さのコントラストがきれいですね。

This is Senso-ji temple in Asakusa.
It is the oldest temple in Tokyo and its history goes back to 645.

We are standing at Kaminarimon Gate, the first gate to the temple.
We see Hozomon Gate, and to its right, Five-storied Pagoda.

The red buildings and the white snow are making beautiful contrast.





これが雷門。
１８６５年の大火で焼失。
１９６０年パナソニックの創業者松下幸之助さんの寄進で再建されました。
さすが！

This is Kaminarimon Gate.
It was burned down in a massive fire in 1865, and was reconstructed in 1960 by Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic.

門の右手には風神が。

Fujin, God of Wind, stands on the right and guards the temple.

門の左手には雷神が。

Raijin, The God of Thunder, stands on the left.

雷門と宝蔵門の間の仲見世通り。

いつも混んでいますよね。
お土産が買えます。浮世絵のお店もあります。

The street between Kaminarimon Gate and Hozomon Gate is called Nakamise-Dori.
It is always very crowded, a great spot to buy souveniors.
You can buy many kinds of sweets, Kimono, Ukiyoe, fans, and so much more.

これが宝蔵門。

東京大空襲で焼けてしまいましたが、１９６４年にホテルニューオータニの創始者大谷米太郎さんの寄進で立て直されたそうです。
これまた立派な方ですね～。

This is Hozomon Gate.
It was burned down in the WWⅡTokyo air raids in 1945, and was reconstructed by Yonetaro Otani, the founder of the Hotel New Otani in 1964.

五重の塔。
やはり戦災で焼失しましたが、１９７３年に立て直されました。
このとき、以前と反対側に立て直されたので、広重の絵のようには見えなくなりました。

This is Five-storied Pagoda.
It was also burned down during WWⅡ．
When it was rebuilt in 1973, it was rebuilt on the other side of Hozomon Gate.
So, you can't see it as in the picture of Hiroshige.

そして、これが本堂。１９５８年再建。

This is the main hall, reconstructed in 1958.

広重の絵にある提灯は実はこの本堂にかけられています。

The same-looking lantern as in Hiroshige's picture is hanging there.

「志ん橋」と書かれています。

東京新橋組合の奉納と書かれてありました。

It says Shinbashi.
Shinbashi is a name of an area in Tokyo.
The people of Shinbashi contributed this lantern.




さてそれでは雷門のところから見てみましょう。

Now, let's stand at Kaminarimon Gate and see how it looks now.

暑い季節に行ったので、当然ながら雪はありません。

I visited Asakusa when it was still hot.
So, there isn't any snow, of course.



でもご存知でした？
この広重の錦絵は１８５６年７月改印なんですよ。
その理由は、江戸っ子の好んだ「涼を求める」演出だったとか。
私もしゃれてていいと思います！

But you know what?
Hiroshige and the publisher published this picture in July 1856.
Some say it was to relieve summer lethargy, and people of Edo loved such twist.
I like it, too!

１２景 上野山した Ueno Yamashita

上野の南側は山下とよばれていました。
木々の間にたなびく薄桃色が上野の桜を表しています。
江戸時代、上野には多くの寺院があったため、このあたりは大勢の人が集まってにぎやかでした。
料理屋や講談、見世物などがならんでいたそうですよ。

This area, the south of Ueno, was called Yamashita.
The pink cloud between the trees represents the cherry blossom in Ueno.
In Edo era, there were many temples in Ueno.
So, many people visited the area, and there were many restaurants and entertainments.



青い看板に書いてあるのは、「しそめし伊勢屋」
お料理やさんですね。

The blue sign says "Restaurant Iseya."



おそろいの傘をさした一行は、粋な花見客でしょうか？
上野の山に向かっているようです。

People carrying the matching parasol look very chic.
They are going to Ueno, to enjoy cherry blossom.




伊勢屋の左には五条天神。
今は上野公園の中に移っています。

The shrine next to Iseya is Gojo Tenjin.
It is now located in the Ueno Park.

学問と医学の神様だとか。

It is dedicated to the gods of medicine and learning.

さて、界隈を歩いてみましょう。

Now, let's take a walk around the area.



これは鈴本演芸場。
１８５７年開設。
ということは、ちょうど広重さんが江戸百景を描いていた頃ではないですか！
落語、漫才、曲芸、紙切り、マジックなどいろいろな芸が見られるんですって。
たっぷり４時間楽しんで一般で２８００円。
ちょっと入りにくいけど、一度は体験してみたいわ。

This is Suzumoto Entertainment Hall, opened in 1857.
Oh, it's around the same time that Hiroshige was painting these "100 Views of Edo!"
In this hall, you can enjoy Rakugo (Japanese traditional comic storytelling), Manzai(stand-up comedy dialogue), acrobatics, paper cut-out trick, magic, and so on.
The 4-hour show ticket for adult is 2800 Yen.
I would like to see it sometime.

近くには庶民の味方アメ横も。

生鮮食料品、おかし、衣料品、靴、かばん、毛皮のコートまで売っています。
威勢のいい声がとびかってましたよ。
お店の人とのやりとりが楽しめます。
年末の買い出しにはなんと一日５０万人もの人出になるそう。
すごいですね

This is Ame-Yoko market.
They sell almost anything, fish, meat, sweets, clothes, shoes, bags, and even fur coats.
Sellers are calling and yelling.
Talk to the seller and you might be able to get a good deal.
For the end-of-the-year shopping (to prepare for New Year's feast), about half a million people come to Ame-yoko a day.
Wow!

さて昔と同じ場所に立ってみますよ。

Now let's compare now and then.

伊勢屋のかわりに見えたものは、カラオケ、パチンコ、ヨドバシカメラ、それにたくさんの飲食店。
昔も今も上野は庶民をひきつけます。

There's no Iseya.
Instead,there are Karaoke Boxes, pachinko,a big electronics shop, and many, many restaurants and bars.
Ueno did, and certainly still does, attract many people.
