Medaka fish

Remember the big pot in my garden?
I have medaka fish in it, but during winter, it is covered with thick ice.
When we had big snow last winter, it looked like this.

Some of you wanted to know if my fish survived.

Well, my pot now looks like this.

And twenty or so medaka are swimming peacefully.

Medaka is a small fish, about 3 or 4 cm long.
They come in brown, orange or white (like mine).
They are very hardy and easy to keep.

When spring comes, they start laying tiny eggs.
Then, I have to take out the eggs into another container.
(Otherwise, they eat their eggs and babies.)

Within a few weeks, they hatch.
They are so super tiny, they are almost invisible at first.

Here's a quiz.  There are five babies in the photo below.
Can you find them?

It might be easier to look for their shadows.

答え
Here's the answer.

Little by little, they get bigger.
These are about 0.8 cm long.

When they are big enough, I put these babies back to my pot.
And the life in my pot goes on and on.

I'm enjoying it!\(^o^)/

Bocchan and Matsuyama

"Bocchan" is a famous Japanese novel written by Soseki Natsume (1867-1916).

Soseki was born and grew up in Tokyo.  After graduating, he spent a year in Matsuyama teaching English.  Later, in 1906, he wrote "Bocchan" based on this experience.

The hero of the story, Bocchan, a young man with Edokko (old Tokyo) spirit comes to a country town to teach math. The town has a good hot spring, but that's about it.  Bocchan is annoyed with curious town people and his colleagues such as Akashatsu (Red shirt) and Nodaiko (Clown) and in the end, decides to go back to Tokyo.

It's a fun story, but even so, I can't help feeling sad.
Bocchan doesn't like Matsuyama. (T_T)

Nevertheless, Matsuyama loves Bocchan.
We love the funny episodes and the unique characters in the novel.

So, we have named many things after the novel.
Bocchan Ressha (street car).

Bocchan Dango

Dogo beer Bocchan

And a lot more.  Bocchan Stadium, Bocchan Theater, Bocchan Literary Award, etc.

これは、

This is ...

Okonomiyaki Restaurant Soseki

Soseki Natsume

This is my favorite Okonomiyaki restaurant in Matsuyama.
They have been in business for more than 40 years.

Look at their menu.

Bocchan (pork) ¥590
Madonna (shrimp) ¥640
Yamaarahi (beef)  ¥670 ...
Names are all related to the novel.  Isn't that fun?

It is located right in front of the Matsuyama City Station.
If you are looking for some reasonable, good restaurant in Matsuyama, this is a place for you.
(You can make Okonomiyaki yourself, or they can make it for you.)

By the way, do you remember Barysan, the champion of the Yuru-kyara Grand Prix 2012?  They opened Barysan Land on the seventh floor of Takashimaya Department Store.
Okonomiyaki Restaurant Soseki is very close to it.
Meet this big Barysan after your Okonomiyaki. (^^)

Issho-ni Shashin Toroya (let's have a picture taken together.)

Dogo Onsen Beer and Tobeyaki

I visited my parents in Matsuyama this month.
While I was there, I went to Dogo Onsen, the oldest spa in Japan.
( I wrote about it here.)
Dogo Onsen Honkan (Main Building)

If you are interested, I recommend you visit there soon.
I learned they need to renovate this 120-year-old bathhouse.  They will be closed for several years from autumn 2017.

As always, I took a nice, hot, relaxing bath and enjoyed friendly talks with old ladies.
And thanks to Dru, I knew where to quench my thirst this time.
It's right next to the Dogo Onsen Honkan.
Brewery Restaurant Bakushukan

Dogo Beer "Bocchan"

They make four kinds of beer, Bocchan, Madonna, Soseki and Nobosan.
But I only had one glass.
It was still in the morning, and I still had a long day to go.

Satisfied, I headed back to Dogo Station.
On the way, I saw these very hungry, baby swallows,

and many small souvenir shops along the way.
Haikara Dori

And for the love of tobeyaki pottery, I went into a tobeyaki shop, Suikodo.

Tobeyaki is a pottery made in Tobe town in Matsuyama.
It began in Edo period and more than 70 studios in the area are still producing the pottery.
It's known for hand painted, bold indigo-blue lines on milk white porcelain.
I love its warmth, beauty and sturdiness.

I often use tobeyaki pottery at home, and this time, I found what I've been looking for for a long time; plates that go well with cakes.

I was really looking for years.  So, when I found them at the store, I literally leaped with joy!
Out of ten designs they had, I picked these five.

They are all hand made, so each shape is slightly different.

They have interesting surface, called Nunome.
Material texture is embossed on the surface.

I was so happy.  I had to try them.

Just as I wanted.
And the cakes were great, too. (^_^)v
