A Hundred Views of Edo: 20景川口のわたし善光寺　View20 Kawaguchi Ferry and Zenkoji Temple

荒川の流れです。江戸時代、こちら岸に岩淵宿、対岸に川口宿があり、人々は渡し舟で荒川を渡っていました。

右手前に１艘の渡し舟が見えますね。

川を下っていくのは、江戸へ木材を運ぶいかだです。

This is the Arakawa River. In the Edo era, people crossed this river by a ferry called Kawaguchi Ferry. We see one on the front right. We also see many rafts. They are rafting logs down the river to the city of Edo.

見づらいですが、画面右奥の赤い建物が善光寺です。

善光寺といえば信濃の善光寺が有名ですが、江戸時代には川口の善光寺も信濃の善光寺と同じご利益があるとされ、江戸庶民がこぞって参詣したとのこと。大変栄えたそうです。

Though it's hard to see, there is a red building on the other side of the river. It is Kawaguchi Zenkoji Temple. There is a very famous Zenkoji Temple in Nagano. But for the Edo people, it was very far. So, in Hiroshige's time, it was popular among them to visit Kawaguchi Zenkoji Temple instead of the one in Nagano.

とってもひっそりとしていました。

It was very quiet.

川の方を眺めると…

I looked toward the river,

JRの鉄橋が見えました。

さいたま市民の私が都内へ向かうとき、いつも電車で渡っている橋です。こんな橋だったんですね。走っている列車がおもちゃのように見えました。

and I saw the JR railroad bridge. Though I cross this bridge every time I take a train to Tokyo, this was the first time I actually saw the bridge. The train looked like a toy.

さて、善光寺の確認ができました。今度は岩淵の方へ渡ります。

もちろん今は渡し舟ではありません。新荒川大橋を渡っていきます。

Well, I checked out Zenkoji Temple. Now, I will cross the river to the other side. But of course, I don't use a ferry. I'm going over the New Arakawa Ohashi bridge.

下から見上げると大きいですね。

It is a very big bridge.

さて、これが岩淵側からみた荒川です。

一番高いビルは55階建てのマンション、エルザタワーです。

I came to the other side.

The tallest building is a 55-story condominium, Elsa Tower.

広々としていて、気持ちいい！
サイクリングやジョギングを楽しむ人が大勢いました。

It was a peaceful sight!
A lot of people were enjoying walking, cycling, and jogging along the river.

ウォータースキーをする人もいましたよ。

Some were enjoying water skiing.

ところですぐ側に岩淵水門があります。

By the way, this is the Iwabuchi Flood Gate nearby.

岩淵水門は今からおよそ100年前に作られました。それ以前、東京は洪水に悩まされ続けていたとか。その対策として、荒川放水路を堀り、ここで流れを荒川と隅田川の2つに分けたのだそうです。19年もかかる難工事でした。ありがたいことですね。すぐ側にある荒川知水資料館で初めて知りました。

It was built about 100 years ago. Before that, the river flooded very often. To control the water, they dug a new channel and split the river to two flows; the Arakawa river and the Sumida River. It was a big project and it took 19 years to complete. Thank goodness! I learned this at a small museum nearby.

さて、それでは広重の絵に戻りましょう。

対岸の善光寺は今はどんな風に見えるでしょうか？

Now, let's go back to Hiroshige's picture.

Can we still see the Zenkoji Temple across the river?

わかるでしょうか？青い屋根が善光寺です。

高いビル群に囲まれていますが、見えてよかった！満足です！

Do you see the blue roof on the other side? That's the Zenkoji Temple. It is surrounded by many tall buildings. But I could still see it. I was quite satisfied!

あたりには桜の木がたくさんありました。

もうすぐ桜の季節、満開の桜が楽しみです。

I saw many cherry blossom trees along the river bank.

They will be in full bloom within a month. I can't wait!
