神田川の南岸、今の昌平橋と万世橋の間に広がっていた八ッ小路です。緑の堤の向こうを神田川が流れています。遠くにそびえているのが神田明神。（神田明神については６６景へ）
画面中央、堤に小さな隙間が開いているのがわかりますか？そこに昌平橋(46景をどうぞ）が架かっていました。その脇の小屋は辻番所です。
This open area was on the south bank of Kanda River, between what is now Shohei-bashi Bridge and Mansei-bashi Bridge.
Kanda River is flowing behind the green embankment.
You see there is a little gap in the embankment?
That's where Shohei-bashi Bridge is.(For Shohei-bashi bridge, see View 46)
Next to the bridge is a little guardhouse.
On the hill in the distance stands Kanda Myojin Shrine.

八ッ小路はその名の通り、たくさんの道に通じていたので、大勢の人が行き交いました。左下の行列はおつきの女性などから見て、大名家のご婦人のものだそうですよ。
This open area was called Yatsukoji, literally meaning "Eight Streets," as it was a junction into which streets led from all directions.
A lot of people are coming and going.
A long procession, headed by ladies-in-waiting, guarded by Samurai, must be that of a Daimyo's wife.
タイトルにある筋違（すじかい）とは筋違門のこと。

こんなに高いＪＲ神田万世橋ビル。
この春完成したばかりです。
this tall building, JR Kanda Manseibashi Building.
It's just completed this spring.
入口付近にその歴史を語る古い写真が並んでいましたよ。
At the entrance, they have these display screens, showing the history of the place.

それによると江戸時代ここは筋違門。
According to them, it was Sujikai Gate in Edo era.

八ッ小路 Yatsukoji
明治になって万世橋駅となりました。
１９１４年に東京駅が建つまで、ずいぶん栄えたメインターミナルだったそうですよ。
Then, Manseibashi Station. It was a flourishing main terminal until Tokyo Station was built in 1914.

その後２００６年までは交通博物館。
Then, Transportation Museum until 2006.

さて、万世橋から昌平橋方向を見るとこんな感じ。
左はＪＲ中央線の高架橋です。赤レンガに歴史を感じますね。

The red-brick structure along the river is the old elevated tracks of JR Chuo Line.

ＪＲによるとこの歴史ある赤レンガ高架橋を活用して、下のような商業施設を整備するのだとか。万世橋駅の旧ホームも残っていて展望カフェや屋外デッキを作るんだそうですよ。楽しそう！
According to JR, they are now planning to redevelop the site like this. They are building decks and a cafeteria on the old platform. Sounds fun!
この夏完成予定。ぜひ行ってみたいです。
It will open this summer. I'd like to visit there.
さて、八ッ小路を抜けて昌平橋まで行ってみましょう。

この角を曲がると昌平橋です。
ということはこの正面あたりに辻番所があったということでしょうか？

I never knew they wanted to start a little shopping area under the tracks. I can't wait to see it this summer. Thanks for the information. ^^d

Doesn't that sound exciting? (^_^)v I hope they will have nice and reasonable shops and cafes there. And I hope the river water will be cleaner.
There's so much development in this area. Not that I'm surprised: I've always said Kanda is one of Tokyo's most under-appreciated gems. I just hope there aren't so many new skyscrapers that Kanda loses its old world charm.
I'd love to go to that new development once it's finished! ^^

The good news, they are planning to clean up the moat at Chidorigafuchi. Maybe take 3 years but they are going to try again. They also have to replant all the cherry trees over the years. They are getting too old. :(

お久しぶりです。5月5日バスツアーで、スカイツリーに上がって来ました。お天気も良く遠くまで見えるかな？ワクワクしながら行ってみると、はるか遠くはモヤがかかっているようで筑波山を見ることができませんでした。時間があまりないので、３５０ｍまででした。今までの写真や、説明で江戸時代のイメージがほんの少しですがわかったようなきがしました。隅田川クルーズもしました。帰りのバスから提灯の明かりの屋形船と紫色に点灯したスカイツリーが見られました。

スカイツリー上がってきたんですね！私はまだ日中に上がったことがないので、ぜひ上がりたいです。でもお天気が良くても筑波山が見られなかったとは。よっぽど運がよくないとくっきり遠くまで見渡すことは難しいんでしょうか。

こんばんは。「ぶらタモリ」で万世橋駅を見た事が有ります。
交通博物館も懐かしいです。不忍通りから、昌平橋通りを通って秋葉原に車で、よく買い物に行きました。
最近は電車でヨドバシカメラアキバに行く事が多くなりました。

「ぶらタモリ」私も見たかったです。東京駅と同じ辰野金吾の設計だったとか。立派だったんでしょうね。
Minoruさまは秋葉原もよくご存じなんですね。私はいつも山手線の中から見るだけだったのですが、今回歩いてみて少し様子がわかりました。
楽しく拝見しました。
”神田川”♪があまりに有名なので、名前を聞くと、行ったことがなくても知っている気がします＾＾
当時の八ツ小路の様子がよく描かれていて面白いですね。庶民の暮らしと賑わい、身分の高いご婦人の行列、それが並行しているんですね。
赤い煉瓦造りの高架橋下のショッピング通り、楽しみですね。横浜の赤レンガ倉庫や小樽の街を思い出します。

以前から「なんか古いレンガだな」とは思っていたんですが、今回まで万世橋駅のことなどちっとも知りませんでした。そこに交通博物館を建てていたことも。
新しいビルが立ち並ぶ印象が強い東京ですが、けっこう歴史が残っているんですね。
八ツ小路のこの絵はあまりなんとも思っていなかったんですが、調べていくうちにこれも面白い一枚だと思うようになりました。
