84景 品川すさき View 84 Shinagawa Susaki

品川宿から江戸湾を見た景色ですが、まずは江戸時代の地図をご覧ください。

This is the view of Edo Bay from Shinagawa-shuku.

But first, let's look at the old map of the area .

ピンクの丸の中にあるのが、28景に描かれている御殿山です。

右上から斜めに下りる道（ピンクの線の道）が東海道。

東海道53次で日本橋から数えて最初の宿場町がここ品川宿でした。

街道沿いには宿屋、料理屋、妓楼が数百軒も並んでいたそうですよ。

Encircled in pink is Goten-yama, depicted in View 28.

The street running from upper right to lower left (with a pink line) is Tokaido, which was the main traveling route between Edo and Kyoto.

Shinagawa-shuku was the first station from Nihonbashi, Edo, and there were several hundreds of shops, inns and brothels in this area.

くねくね曲がるのが目黒川。

河口に長い舌のような土地がのびていますね。

それがこの84景のタイトルにある洲崎です。

地図には漁師町と書かれていますね。

そしてその先端にあるのが洲崎弁天社です。

The narrow winding river is Meguro River.

Do you see a spit of land at its mouth?

The land was called Susaki, the title of this View.

It was fishermen's town.

And at its tip was Susaki Benten Shrine.

広重は品川宿の星マークのあたりから、矢印の方向、江戸湾を見ています。

というわけで、さあもう一度広重の絵を見てみましょう。

Hiroshige is at the red star, looking in the direction of the arrow, toward the Edo Bay.

Let's look at the print again.

  

赤い鳥居の弁天社が描かれていますね。

その向こうに江戸湾の美しい青が広がります。

白い帆が映えますね。

手前の流れが目黒川で、さらにその手前、左下に描かれているのは品川宿の有名な妓楼「土蔵相模」だそうです。（部屋の中は83景みたいな感じだとか。よかったらクリックしてご覧ください。）

Benten Shrine is surrounded by pine trees.

The beautiful blue of Edo Bay stretches beyond it, nicely accented with white sails.

The river in the front is Meguro River, and the house to the lower left is said to be "Dozo Sagami," the most famous brothel in Shinagawa-shuku. (If you are interested, the room looks something like this View 83.)

さて、あたりは今どんな感じでしょう？
東海道の通りは今も商店街として残っています。

Now, let's go and see how the area looks today.
The old Tokaido road still remains.

　旧東海道　It's a shopping street.

でも目黒川は流れを変えられたので、この辺りでは埋め立てられて道路になっています。

But the Meguro river changed its course.
In this area, it was filled in, and now it's a road. 

この道が目黒川でした。This road was Meguro River.

でもあたりにはまだ結構船がありました。

But still, I could see many boats moored in the area.

洲崎弁天社も同じところに健在です。
ただし今は利田（かがた）神社という名前です。

Susaki Benten Shrine stands on the same spot, too.
But it changed its name to Kagata Shrine.

小さな神社ですが、敷地内に江戸時代から伝わる鯨塚があるんですよ。

It's a small shrine, but one thing unique about it is that it has Kujira-zuka, a whale tomb from the time of Edo.

1798年品川沖の江戸湾に大きな鯨が迷い込み、
品川の漁師たちがこれを捕獲しました。
江戸中大騒ぎ。
大勢の人が大きな鯨を見にきたそうです。
11代将軍までご覧になったそうですよ。
日本人の珍し物好きは昔からなんですねぇ。
で、その鯨の骨がこの神社に葬られ、鯨塚が建てられたそうです。

In 1798, a big whale strayed into Edo Bay and Shinagawa fishermen caught it.
It created a great sensation in Edo.
A lot of people, even the 11th Shogun, came to see it.
Later, to console the whale's spirit, they buried its bones in this shrine and built this tomb.

神社横の公園には鯨が…。

さて、それでは広重の絵のように神社を入れて、写真を撮ってみましょう。

I tried to take a photo like Hiroshige's print, with the shrine in it.

わかりにくいですが、中央に見える木のところが神社です。
でも埋め立てが進んで、ビルが建って、ここから海を見ることはできませんでした。

It's hard to see, but the shrine is by the tree in the center.

But so much land was reclaimed, and so many buildings were built.

There was no way I could see the sea from here.
