27景 蒲田の梅園 View 27 Plum Garden in Kamata

東海道沿いにある蒲田には、旅の道中常備薬「和中散」を売るお店が４軒ありました。

それぞれ梅園を開いて、薬を売り、さらに茶屋を設けて競いあっていたそうです。

In the time of Edo, the major traveling route between Edo and Kyoto was Tokaido Road. 

Kamata village was along that road, and there were four shops in the village that sold Wachusan, a must-have remedy for travelers.

Each of these shops had a plum garden and tea houses to attract more customers.

この絵にあるのはそのうちの１軒、山本久三郎の梅園です。

およそ３０００坪の広大な敷地に池まで作り、茶屋を置き、沢山の石碑を建てていました。

広重の時代、蒲田で一番人気のお店で、梅の季節には旅人ばかりでなく、梅見客も多かったそうですよ。

The plum garden in this print is one of them, made by Kyuzaburo Yamamoto.

In his 10,000 square-meter garden, he planted many plum trees.

 He made a pond, tea houses and a lot of stone monuments.

In Hiroshige's time, it was the most popular garden in Kamata. 

It attracted many people from Edo, as well as many travelers.

絵の右手には駕籠が見えています。

駕籠から降りて、梅見を楽しんでいるのはどんな人なんでしょうね。

In Hiroshige's print, on the right, is a part of a palanquin.

Somebody is enjoying a short stop in the garden.

明治になっても人気の地で、木戸孝充や伊藤博文らがこの梅屋敷で新年会を開いたりしたんだそうですよ。

明治天皇もお気に入りだったようで、９度も行幸されたそうです。

 This garden remained popular even after the Meiji Restoration.

Kido Takayoshi and Ito Hirofumi (famous politicians in Meiji) held a spring party here.

 Emperor Meiji also loved it and visited here nine times.

でもやがてその敷地はだんだん狭くなって…。

今は、小さいですが聖蹟蒲田梅屋敷公園として残っています。

Though it gradually got smaller and smaller, it remains as Kamata Umeyashiki Park today.

さあ、行ってみましょう。

京急線の梅屋敷駅で下車。

Get off at Umeyashiki Station on Keikyu Line.

少し歩くと公園に到着です。

Walk a few minutes, and you are there.

ところが一部閉鎖中。　(>_<)

But it was partially closed. (>_<)

京急線高架工事の資材置き場に利用されているようです。

 They are using the park as stockyard for the Keikyu Line track elevation project.  

池も水が干上がっています。　(>_<)

And the pond was dried up.　(>_<)

でも梅の花は満開でした。＼(^o^)／

But the plum flowers were beautiful. ＼(^o^)／

さらにもっと育っています。　They are growing more plum trees.

広重の絵のように、石碑もたくさんありました。

Just like in Hiroshige's print, there were many stone monuments in the park.

梅屋敷山本家の門の横に里程標があったそうです。日本橋まで３里１８丁（約１３．７キロ）。

江戸へ向かう旅人はこれを見てヤレヤレと思ったでしょうか？　

This kind of stone marker used to stand at the gate of Umeyashiki.

It says "13.7 km to Nihonbashi."  A traveler to Edo must have felt relieved to see that. 

梅あり、池あり、石碑あり。

小さいですが昔を大切にした公園でした。

Yes, the park is very tiny, but it has many plum trees, a pond and many stone monuments.

They show respect to the old days, and I think that's nice.

京急線の高架工事は無事に終了したようなので、公園の資材置き場ももうすぐ撤去されるでしょうか。

いつかまた見に行きたいと思います。

How will the park look like when the stockyard is cleared? 

I want to revisit the park some day.
