７８景 鉄砲洲稲荷橋湊神社 Teppozu Inari-bridge Minato-shrine

手前に見える大きな2本の帆柱。

大きな船が停泊しているようです。

諸国から運ばれてきた物資はこのあたりで小さな舟に移し替えられて、水路江戸各地へ運ばれていきました。

赤い塀が湊神社です。

湊神社は波よけ稲荷とも呼ばれていました。

The two masts in the foreground tell us that a big ship is anchored off the shore.

Here, goods were transferred to smaller boats, and then, brought upstream.

You can see the red walled Minato-shrine, which was believed to be the protectorate god of the sea.

今はこの水路は埋め立てられ、稲荷橋もありません。

というわけで、このあたりはすっかり様変わり。がっかり。

Now the river is buried and there's no Inari-bridge.

It has changed almost completely. How sad!

ただ湊神社はちゃんとありましたよ。

But there remains the Minato-shrine all right.

ところで、今回は素敵な出会いがありました。

湊神社を探していると、突然の激しい雷雨。

あまりに突然だったので、しかたなく軒をお借りして雨宿り。

まるでトトロのようにぼうっとしていました。

すると、しばらくして、向かいの家からおばあさんが出てきました。

おばあさんは私のところへやってきて、 「この傘をさしあげますから」と!

どうやら窓から雨宿りをしている私に気付き、

わざわざ傘を渡しにきてくれたようです。

あまりの親切にびっくり。心が温かくなりました。

これぞ、困っている人をほおっておけない江戸っ子魂でしょうか？

おばあさん、ありがとうございました。

Oh, by the way, I learned that the caring humanity of Edo still exists in this area.

While I was looking for the Minato-shrine, I was caught in a sudden thunderstorm.

It was so sudden that I had to take shelter under the eaves of a building.

I felt like I was Totoro. (I hope you know what I mean.)

Twenty minutes or so later, an old lady came out of a house across the street and came up to me.

"Here, you can take this umbrella," she said.

She must have seen me from her window.

She couldn't just leave me there.

I felt so warm inside.

She must be a person who is always willing to help someone in trouble.

That's an old good Edokko Spirit that we should treasure!
