Azumino

These are the photos from my trip to Azumino, Nagano, in May.
This will be the post with a lot of photos and a little explanation.
The rice field was filled with water, ready for planting.
The water reflects the Japan Alps.

< Daio Wasabi Farm>
It's a kind of park, where you can see wasabi growing, see a beautiful scenery, eat, ride a boat, and so on.
I didn't know wasabi grows so beautifully.
You can buy wasabi.  Also you can try wasabi ice cream, wasabi beer , wasabi curry.

Clear water is essential for wasabi cultivation.

Water was so clear.
Some of you might recognize this stream.
This is where they filmed NHK morning drama, Ohisama.

Past Shofuku-ji temple, we did a little hiking to Gishikino Iwaya, guided by the little statues.

Again, please ignore the boy.
People used to say this is where Oni lived.  But in fact, it is an ancient tomb.

Maybe because of the clear water from the Alps, the food was excellent, such as Shinshu salmon, Shinshu beef, milk, tomatoes, soba and wasabi.
It has become another favorite place of mine. (^^)

Climbing a miniature Mt. Fuji

Today, July 1, is Mt. Fuji's yamabiraki day (the first day of climbing season).
As Mt. Fuji was designated as a World Heritage site just this June, it was a big news this morning on TV.
They said some people climb Mt. Fuji with little preparation and it can be fatal.
Mt. Fuji from Jukkoku-toge

Yes, I can imagine, it's not easy to climb Mt. Fuji.
But I know much easier way.  So did the people of Edo.
It's called Fuji-zuka.(^^)

Fuji-zuka are man-made miniature Fuji, most of which were built in the Edo period.
Those days, people worshiped Mt. Fuji and it was their dream to climb Mt. Fuji.
But it was far away.  It was dangerous.  Not anyone could do that.
So, instead, they built miniature Fuji in their community.
It is said there were more than a hundred Fuji-zuka in Edo.
Some remain, and some don't.

Today, I went to climb one of them, which is in Ono Terusaki Shrine in Taito ward.

This Fuji-zuka is open to public only two days a year, June 30 and July 1.
It's a very special occasion.
Ono Terusaki Shrine

This is Fuji-zuka.
It's about 6 meters tall and 15 meters in diameter.
It's rockier than I imagined.
I learned they brought rocks from Mt. Fuji by boat and built this in 1828.

Now. let's start climbing!

This marks the fourth station.   Phew! Six more to go!

Hooray!  I came to the top!

Taking pictures along the way, it took me about three minutes to climb that Mt. Fuji. \(^o^)/

Now, let's explore the shrine itself.
This is the main shrine.
They had bamboo decorations for coming Tanabata day.

Ono Terusaki Shrine was established in 852, first in Ueno.
Later, it was relocated to this present site.
I was surprised to learn that this building was built in 1866.
It survived Great Kanto Earthquake and WWⅡ!

This shrine is good for academic and artistic achievements.
It enshrines a real person Ono-no Takamura.
He was a scholar and poet in early Heian period.
One of his waka poem is in Hyakunin Isshu.

My favorite blogger, Tall Gary translated this as follows (I hope he doesn't mind);

On the wilderness of the sea
Cast off

Chino-wa kuguri ceremony was being held.

This is another little shrine for Inari and Orihime.

It was an interesting shrine.
