25景目黒元不二 View 25 Moto-Fuji in Meguro

今の代官山あたりから、西を望む絵です。

遠くには白い富士山。

近景の山は元富士（不二）です。

山といっても人工のもの。いわゆる富士塚です。

This is not far from Daikanyama today.

We are looking to the west, hence white Mt. Fuji can be seen in the far distance.

The mountain in the foreground is Moto-Fuji, which actually

is not a mountain, rather, a man-made replica of Mt. Fuji.

江戸時代、富士山信仰が盛んでした。

でも、富士登山となると、なかなか大変。

そこで、人々は町に富士塚を作り、同じご利益があるようにそれに登りました。

江戸市中になんと100以上の富士塚があったそうですよ。

（そのうちの一つに登ったときのことは、ここに書いてあります。よかったらどうぞ。）

In the late Edo period, many such mini-Fuji were built.

Why?

Edo people worshiped Mt. Fuji, but it wasn't easy to go and climb the mountain.

So, people built many (more than a hundred!) mini-Fuji in the city. 

(I went to one of them and wrote about it here.) 

さて、この元富士。

1812年に作られて、高さおよそ12メートル。

江戸でも人気の富士塚でした。

というのも、目黒川を見下ろす高台にあって、本物の富士山の眺めも抜群でしたから。

Built in 1812 and 12 meters tall, Moto-Fuji was one of the most popular mini-Fuji in Edo.

It was on the bluff overlooking Meguro River, and it offered splendid view of the real Fuji.

元富士と呼ばれるようになったのにはわけがあって、1819年すぐ近くにもう一つ富士塚が作られたから。

こちらが元富士、あちらが新富士というわけです。

Moto-Fuji literally means "Original Fuji."  

It was called "original" because in 1819, another mini-Fuji was built nearby, which was called "Shin-Fuji (New Fuji)."

残念ながらこの元富士は1878年に取り壊され、その跡地に案内板が残されているのみ。

Sadly, Moto-Fuji was dismantled in 1878.

Only a guide plate says it was once here.

 

跡地は高級マンションになっています。The place is now a luxurious condominium.

富士山は…見えないです！Can I see Mt. Fuji from there?  No!　(>_<)

マンションの高層に住んでいたら、もしかしたら見えるのかな？確かに眺めはよさそうです。

But you might be able to see it if you are living up there.　They sure seem to be enjoying a good view.

元富士にあった石碑は、近くの上目黒氷川神社に移されているそうです。

I learned that a stone monument from Moto-Fuji is now kept in Kami-Meguro Hikawa Shrine.

目黒富士登山もできるようになっています。

 And they made mini-Fuji climbing course there.

This is the old stone monument from Moto-Fuji.

元富士の跡を追ってきましたが、まだ広重の絵のような一枚は撮れていません。

I've followed the trace of Moto-Fuji, but I haven't taken any photo that I can compare with Hiroshige's print.

Where can I take it?

でも大丈夫。今回はちょっとしたアイデアが。　(^^)

I sort of had an idea.  (^^)

上目黒氷川神社の前の大きな通りの向こう側に大橋ジャンクションがあります。

Not far from Kami-Meguro Hikawa Shrine, just across a big street, is this unique structure.

そこが目黒天空庭園となっているのはご存知でしょうか？
大橋ジャンクションを覆う屋根の上を緑化した公園で、2013年3月にオープンした時は、ニュースでもさかんに取り上げられていました。
前から行ってみたいと思っていたのですが、今回ついに実現しました。

It's called Meguro Sky Garden.
It is a garden park constructed on a sloping roof that covers the intersection of expressways.
When it opened in March 2013, it was a big topic.
Finally, I get to visit there.

公園は緑で覆われていました。

There are many trees,

畑もありました。

and even vegetable garden,

運動場も　athletic field, too

元富士のように、この公園からの景色も西に開けています。
一番高いところには富士山の見える展望台もあるんですよ。

Just like Moto-Fuji, this park has a good view toward west.
And on the top of the park is the deck where you can see Mt. Fuji. 

ということは、本日の一枚はそこからのお写真ということで。

So, it must be the place for the photo of the day.
Let's compare.

残念！こちらの方角のはずですが、その日は富士山は見えませんでした。
でもこの天空庭園、なんとなく「現代の元富士」と言ってもいい気がしますがどうでしょう？　＼(^o^)／

Oh, well...this must be the right direction, but I couldn't see Mt. Fuji that day.
But I think this unique structure in Meguro can be said, in some ways, today's Moto-Fuji in Meguro. ＼(^o^)／

28景 品川御殿やま View 28 Goten-yama in Shinagawa

なんとなく上下の趣が違う絵ですね。

上半分はお花見の景色。ピンクの桜の下花見を楽しむ人々が描かれています。

でも下半分は…。

むき出しの岩肌。灰色のぬかるみを人が歩いています。

This view is not as pretty as others, I think.

The upper half is OK.  It's a nice depiction of cherry blossom viewing, pink blossoms and people strolling under cherry trees. 

But lower half?

Hillside is bare and people are walking through gray muddy swamp.

ここは品川御殿山。

太田道灌が城を築き、また江戸初期には徳川家が江戸湾を見下ろす御殿も建てた山なので御殿山と呼ばれました。

やがて御殿は焼失。8代将軍吉宗が桜の木を植えさせたので、桜の名所となりました。（吉宗は飛鳥山、隅田川沿いの桜も植えたんでしたよね。桜が好きだったんですね。）

This is Goten-yama (Palace Hill) in Shinagawa.

It was called so because in the early Edo period, Tokugawa Shoguns had a villa on this hill, where they could enjoy the great view of Edo Bay.

But sometime later, it was burned down, and the eighth Shogun Yoshimune started planting cherry trees. (This Shogun must have loved cherry blossoms,  He planted cherry trees in so many places, such as Asuka-yama and  the Sumida River.)

Since then, it became a popular cherry blossom viewing spot.

広重も御殿山の桜は何回も描いています。

Hiroshige had depicted Goten-yama many times.

Goten-yama and Edo Bay in the distance  　御殿山とその向こうに江戸湾が広がっています。

でも1853年、御殿山はその形を変えてしまいます。

というのも…

But in 1853, Goten-yama changed its shape.  

Why?

その年、ペリーの黒船が浦賀に来航。

幕府は江戸防衛のため、江戸湾に大砲を設置するための人工の島お台場を数基建設しました。

その時必要となった大量の土砂のためにこの御殿山が削られたというわけです。

この絵は1856年発行ですが、広重は山の形が変わったことを記録しておきたかったのかもしれないですね。

That year, Admiral Perry's Black Ships came to Japan.

In order to defend Edo, Tokugawa Shogunate constructed several battery islands (Odaiba) in Edo Bay.

To construct islands, they needed huge quantities of earth, which they dug away from Goten-yama.

I think in this View 28, published in 1856, Hiroshige wanted to record the change.  

さて、今日の御殿山へ行ってみましょう。

前回の83景の舞台八ツ山からすぐのところです。

Now, let's go and see today's Goten-yama.

It's not far from Yatsuyama of my previous post, View 83.

この高い長い塀を超えた先です。

I just needed to walk past this long wall.

ちなみにこの広い敷地は開東閣という三菱グループの所有地です。

木々に囲まれて見ることはできませんが、岩崎家の元別邸（1908年完成、ジョサイア・コンドル設計）が建ってるんだそうです。

一般公開はせず、今でもパーティーなどで使われているんだそうです。行ってみたいな。

It's a property of Mitsubishi Companies, called Kaitokaku.

Big woods hide the western-style mansion, designed by Joshiah Condor and completed in 1908.

It is still used by the companies for parties and press conferences.     

そしてこの辺りが御殿山。現在御殿山トラストシティと呼ばれています。

And I was there, Gotenyama Trust City. 

 

オフィスビルトラストタワー、高級賃貸住宅トラストコート、それにマリオットホテルから成ります。
It consists of Trust Tower (office building), Trust Court (residence building), and Marriott Tokyo (hotel).

6800平方メートルもの日本庭園もあります。

They have a beautiful Japanese garden.

桜の名所御殿山とのプレートがありました。
This plate says "Goten-yama, Famous for Beautiful Cherry Blossoms."

　今でも桜の木がありました。cherry trees

御殿山に立派な庭園が残っていて、よかった！

I was glad I could find a beautiful garden there.

さて、それでは広重の絵のような写真は撮れるでしょうか？トラストシティを出て、あたりを少々歩くと……＼(^o^)／
こんなのはどうでしょう？　

But now, where can I take a photo like Hiroshige's print?

I walked around the area...... and found it!!  ＼(^o^)／

画面上半分が御殿山トラストシティ、下半分はJRの線路です。

なんとなく、広重の絵に似てなくないですか？　

Gotenyama Trust City on upper half and JR train tracks on lower half.

It does have a feel of Hiroshige's print, doesn't it?

22景 広尾ふる川 View 22 Furukawa River, Hiroo

広重は古川の土手から西を見ています。

川より右側に麻布、広尾、そして左側に白金がありますが、このあたり一帯今日ではなかなかの高級住宅地ですよね。

Hiroshige is standing on the bank of Furukawa River, looking west.

Today, this area is said to be one of the most expensive residential area in Tokyo, Hiroo and Azabu on the right and Shirogane on the left.

でも広重の時代のなんとのどかなこと。

遠くに広がっているのが「広尾が原」。

野遊びの場所として、江戸庶民に人気がありました。

春には土筆をとったり、若葉や春の花々を楽しんだり。

秋には秋の花々、虫の音を楽しんだり。

But it looks so idyllic in Hiroshige's time.

The green hilly area in the distance was called Hiroo Fields, and it was a popular outing spot for Edo people.

In spring, people came to pick horsetails, and to enjoy fresh green and flowers.

In autumn, they came to enjoy autumn flowers and to listen to insect songs.

川に架かっているのは四之橋。

橋の側には「狐鰻（きつねうなぎ）」という鰻屋さんがあって当時評判だったそうです。

下の絵で見ても大きな鰻屋さんですね。

The bridge is Shi-no-hashi, which simply means the fourth bridge.

By the bridge was a popular Unagi (eel) restaurant called "Kitsune Unagi (Fox Eel)."    

The picture below shows the restaurant better.

鰻を知らない海外の方のために、ここで一枚鰻の写真を。

And in case you don't know what Unagi is, this is Unagi.

古川を訪ねた翌日、偶然夫が鰻弁当を持って帰ってくれました。タイミングのよさに感動しました！　＼(^o^)／

May I call it serendipity?  The day after my walk, yes the very next day, my husband brought home this Unagi bento.   ＼(^o^)／

さてそれでは古川を訪ねましょう。

今回私は「古川を歩く」というテーマの会に参加してきました。

橋を順番に見ながら川をさかのぼっていきます。

まずは麻布十番駅に近い一之橋から。

Now, Furukawa River.

This time, I joined a group, and we were to walk along Furukawa river upstream, checking each bridge.

The first bridge was Ichi-no-hashi (First Bridge) near Azabu Juban Station.

川の水は広重の絵のようにはいきませんね。頭上には首都高が。

The water doesn't look like in Hiroshige's print and highways run overhead.

一之橋のすぐ横には川をまたいでプレハブ小屋が建っています。

Right by the bridge, is this temporary hut built over the river.

古川地下調節池インフォメーションセンター

現在、古川の地下に洪水を防ぐための大きな調節池を作っているんだそうです。

Furukawa Underground Regulating Reservoir Information Center

They are making a big reservoir underground in order to prevent flood, and you can learn about it here. 

直径7.5メートル長さ３．３キロに渡る大きなトンネル状の調節池を地下30～40メートルのところに建設中。
They are making a big tunnel-like reservoir, 7.5 meters in diameter and 3.3 kilo meters long, under Furukawa River, about 30～40 meters underground. 

さて、二之橋へと川を上っていきます。
おしゃれな街歩きになるかと思っていたのですが、実際は…

Then, we walked along the river, heading to Ni-no-hashi (Second Bridge).
I was expecting more of a modern city-walk than this.


おしゃれでもなければ、のどかでもなくて。(^_^;)　
この辺りの護岸は昭和初期に整備されたそうで、およそ100年たっています。
not modern, nor idyllic  The river wall is almost 100 years old.

ということは次は四之橋でしょうか？

残念、古川橋です。(^^)

Next comes Shin Furukawa-bashi.

このあたりは完全に首都高の下。
The river is completely covered by highways.


さていよいよ広重の描いた四之橋が近づいてきましたよ。

Finally, we are approaching Shi-no-hashi, which Hiroshige depicted in the print.

赤い橋ですね。　Yes, that red bridge!

鰻屋さんはなかったですが、お蕎麦屋さんがありました。

I saw a soba restaurant by the bridge, but not Unagi restaurant.  



この辺りを少々散策。

この辺りは坂道が多かったです。

It's a hilly neighborhood.



しかもかなり狭い坂道です。　And side streets are quite narrow.

さてそれでは広重の絵と現在を比べてみましょう。

Now, let's compare then and now. 




随分変わりましたね。
でもそれよりも私が意外に思ったのは、辺りにまだまだ古い住宅街がたくさん残っていたことでした。

They look totally different, but it didn't surprise me.
Rather, I was surprised there are still many old neighborhood in the area.　(^^)

さて、ここからは後日談です。

先日私は近所で自転車をこいでいてこんな風景に遭遇。

I'd like to add one more thing here.

A few days ago, I was riding my bike, not far from my house, and I came across this. 

広重の絵にそっくりではありませんか！＼(^o^)／

Wow, this looks like Hiroshige's print! ＼(^o^)／

芝川　Shiba -kawa River

これまでこの川のことは正直あまりよく思っていませんでした。

護岸整備もされていないし、水もそれほどきれいじゃない。

でもこの自然のままにゆったり曲がりくねっていることこそが、とても貴重に思えてきて。

広重さんのおかげでこれまでと違った見方ができるようになりました。

To tell the truth, until then, I didn't care for this river very much. 
 Water doesn't look so clean, and riverbanks are barren.
But I realized how precious it is that this winding river is untouched. 
Thanks to Hiroshige, I started to see it in a new light.
