View 92 Garden of Akiba Shrine in the Village Ukeji

Akiba Shrine was in the village called Ukeji, a little west of the Yotsugi-dori Canal (I wrote about this canal in my previous post, View 105.)

Akiba literally means "autumn leaves." Here, Hiroshige depicts a beautiful autumn scene of its garden.  Red maples are reflecting on the pond.
Do you see a man sitting in the tea house and sketching busily?
It is said that this is Hiroshige himself.
Below is his portrait.

Hmmm, maybe yes,  the man in the print looks like Hiroshige!

Akiba shrine was famous for its spacious beautiful garden.  The pond alone was said to be as large as 1.6 hectares.  Edo people enjoyed visiting the garden throughout the year.  They enjoyed the plum blossoms in spring, kakitsubata flowers (iris laevigata) and satsuki azaleas in early summer, and bush clovers in early autumn.  And of course, they came to admire red leaves in autumn.

Now, let's go and see Akiba Shrine today.
It's about 15-minute walk from Tokyo Sky Tree station.
On the way, I saw this building and had to grin.

Sky Tree and fireworks!
Sumida River Fireworks Festival held in the area in summer is one of the biggest fireworks festivals in Japan.  I love fireworks and would love to see them with Sky Tree in the background. But I'm afraid it's just too crowded.   I think I'll make do with this. (^_-)

Akiba Shrine stands in an old shitamachi residential area.  The street became surprisingly narrow.

And when I saw the approach to the Akiba Shrine, I was shocked!
Can you see Torii gate in the far back?

In spite of its great fame in the Edo period, this short, narrow approach were lined with old houses.

But when I went through it, it was a shrine all right.
And it was well taken care of.
鳥居 torii gate

Main Shrine
Their emblem looks like a maple (?) leaf fan.

A great ginkgo tree, it must be beautiful in autumn.  Maybe I should have come here in autumn...

The history of this shrine goes back to 1289.  It was Inari shrine in the beginning. But later, in the Edo period, they enshrined the fire god of Akiba.  Since fire was a big worry for Edo people, the shrine was worshipped by many people.  There remain several stone lanterns donated by some feudal lords in the early 1700s.

The shrine had to face many difficulties; the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the US air raid in 1945.  The shrine today was rebuilt in 1966.

Meanwhile, the shrine lost much of its premises.
No garden, no pond any more.  (T_T)
So, what should I do about today's photo?

Well, I've decided I have to be very creative this time.
I looked around...... (^^)
Yes, of course!

Akiba shrine and Sky Tree!!  \(^o^)/
I hope Hiroshige likes what I did.

View 105 Koume Embankment

This rural area is now one of the hottest areas in Tokyo.
Where?  We'll see. (^_-)

In the time of Edo, the village was called Koume.  The canal was called Yotsugi-dori yosui.
See the winter rice field?  It was a very peaceful countryside.
Children are playing happily with puppies.
The road on the other side seems a bit busy.  It was a route to  a popular temple further up north, Shibamata Taishakuten.

The canal is now filled and it is now a street called Hikifune-gawa Dori.

Hikifune-gawa Dori

On the corner stands this stone-built, boat-shaped guide sign, which explains where the name Hikifune comes from.

According to the sign, in the time of Edo, they had pull boats like below at the upper stream of this canal.
So, it was called the Hikifune River, pull boat River.

Where Hiroshige once stood, now stands Oshiage apartment building.

I noticed the name Koume remains in the red water tank.

The apartment building was covered for some repairs, but as you can see, it's right at the foot of the Tokyo Sky Tree!!

Before taking my final shot, let me introduce you one of the unique shops, which I found this time, in the Sky Tree.
As many of you already know, Sky Tree has many attractions other than the tower itself; aquarium, planetarium, and huge shopping area Solamachi.

This time, I went to "Tonya Kokubu," on the fifth floor.  It is the official store of Kokubu Corporation, the food and liquor wholesaler with a long history of 300 years.  You might have seen its canned food K&K.
It was more like a museum that shows the history of their goods, and in the far corner of the shop, they have a small restaurant, Kuriya.

What is unique about this restaurant is that they serve dishes  prepared using their canned products.
They display the products they are using that day.

I had this french toast, topped with their canned fruits.

Their price was quite reasonable, just 500 yen for the french toast and coffee.  I recommend it for light eaters.

Also, they had this amber-color Sake made with the old Edo recipe.  I bought it home.  It tasted very different, more like Chinese rice wine.  It's fun to think Edo people were drinking this as Sake.

Back to Hiroshige.  How does the place look now?

As substitute for bridges, I got a crosswalk. (^_^;)
But I'm sure Hiroshige would be very surprised to see the change.

On the train back home, I saw this winter rice field.
This seems more like the rice field in Hiroshige's print.

Setsubun in a Hospital

Last year, I wrote about Setsubun here.
But this year, I spent my Setsubun Day at rather unusual place, a hospital. (T_T)

Please don't worry.
I've recovered well enough to be able to write this. (^_^)v

What I want to introduce you here is the kindness of the hospital staff.

This was our lunch on Setsubun Day, a very colorful Setsubun Bento,

and a small bag of roasted beans,

and a handmade card!

Otafuku and red-oni.  The purple letter says "happiness," and the red stamp says "from nutrition staff"

This card is not something really necessary.
But in order to bring us some Setsubun feel and just to cheer us up, the staff in the hospital cut papers, glued them, and painted them.
How nice!

Spring has come to my hospital bed, too. \(^o^)/
