結納 Yuino

先日長男の結納式がありました。

One of my sons is engaged and the other day, he and his fiancee had an engagement ceremony called Yuino. 

Yuino, though not as common as it used to be, is a long tradition in Japan.

Families of both sides get together to celebrate the engagement and exchange symbolic gifts in a formal way. 

場所は都内のホテル。
訪問着で出かけました。

It used to take place at the bride's home, but nowadays it can be done at other places, too.
We did it at a hotel restaurant in Tokyo.

お式では「幾久しく」という言葉が何度も使われます。
思ったよりずっと厳かで、結構緊張しました。(^^)

The ceremony goes quite formally, as follows.

The groom's father says to the bride's father,
"Thank you for your approval for this marriage. Please accept these gifts ikuhisashiku (very formal way of saying forever and ever.)"
And he offers these.

こちらから送ったセット。帯料、長熨斗、鰹節、するめ、昆布、友白髪、末広、柳樽。それぞれにいろんな意味がこめられていることを改めて知りました。

Obi (kimono sash) money, sake money, dried abalone, dried kelp, dried bonito, dried cuttlefish, fans, white thread of hemp. Each has its own meaning but they all express our wish for their happy marriage.

Then, the bride's father says to the groom's father,
"Thank you.  We accept them ikuhisashiku."

Next, the bride's father says to the groom's father,
"Thank you for your approval for this marriage. Please accept these gifts ikuhisashiku."
He offers these.
  
頂いた物は床の間に飾ってあります。袴料、長熨斗、末広、他。
Hakama (Japanese male skirt) money, dried abalone, fans.

And the groom's father says, 
"Thank you.  We accept them ikuhisashiku."

After that, the bride and the groom exchange gifts, repeating the above procedure.
So, a lot of ikuhisashiku.　(^^)

さて、お式の後は、みんなで楽しく会席料理をいただきます。
お結納にふさわしい、おめでたく美しいお料理でした。

After the ceremony, we had Kaiseki dinner.
It was very beautiful, suitable for this happy occasion.


お刺身　sashimi (Crane is a symbol of longevity.)

特に私がきれいだと思ったのは八寸のこのお皿。
これまでいただいたお料理の中で一番きれいだったと思います。

I especially liked this plate.
It was the most beautiful plate I could remember.

オシドリの中は…。　Lovebirds are the symbol of happy marriage.

素敵な結納式ができて本当にありがたいことだと思っています。

It was a beautiful, wonderful Yuino.


お嫁さんの振り袖姿を見ることができて、それも嬉しかったです。
とてもきれいでした！！

And my future daughter-in-law wore her Furisode Kimono for this ceremony.
She was soooo beautiful!

Furisode is a kimono worn by young unmarried women. The sleeves are very long. (Compare to my kimono sleeves.) And obi, a long sash about four meters long, is tied very elaborately on the back.

お弁当箱 Bento Box

夫が仕事にお弁当を持っていきたいと言い出したのは先月のこと。

「ええっ？どうして食堂で食べるのやめるの？？？食堂で食べようよ～」と頑張ってみましたが…。

「忙しくてゆっくり食べる時間がない」とかの理由で、結局お弁当作りが始まりました。

でもいやいやなので、申し訳ないほどに惨めなお弁当。(>_<)

Last month, my husband said he wanted to bring lunch to his work and asked me hesitantly if I could make Bento (box lunch) for him.

"What?? Why don't you want to eat at the cafeteria any more?" I asked desperately.

He said he's too busy to go to the cafeteria, and that's how I started making Bento for him.

But my reluctant Bento looked terrible!  (>_<)

やる気を出すためには形から！

というわけで新しいお弁当箱を探しに行きました。

びっくりするくらい本当にいろんなお弁当箱がありました。

そこで見つけたお気に入り＼(^o^)／

I went to look for a new Bento box.

I was amazed at the variety of Bento boxes in the store.

And I fell in love with this.　＼(^o^)／

 いい感じ！  Looks good!

合成漆器ということで、残念ながら食洗機は使えない。そこ、かなり迷いましたが、でも、いいんです。自分で洗います。
It's not a real lacquer work, but looks like one.  The only problem is that it's not dishwasher safe.  But I decided I can manage that.

このお弁当箱にお弁当を詰めるのが楽しみです。
でもさて、続くかな～？

Now, I'm looking forward to filling this Bento box.
But for how long?  I'm not sure.

明けましておめでとうございます A Happy New Year!

お久しぶりです！

まるで冬眠中(?)かのようにすっかりご無沙汰でしたが、元気に忙しくしておりました。

実家松山に帰ったり、甥っこの結婚式があったり、初めての鼓童コンサートに行ったり、それからクリスマス、お正月…。

忙しくて、楽しかった！

Long time no see!

Maybe you were wondering if I was hibernating.　(^_-)

Well, I was just enjoying my every day life, visiting my parents in Matsuyama, attending my nephew's wedding, going to Kodo concert for the first time, Christmas, and New Year's get-together.

さて、今年もお節は頑張って作りました。

Every year for the New Year, I make a traditional Japanese  food called Osechi.

It's in wooden boxes called Jubako.

My Jubako is three-tier boxes.

今年はけっこううまく盛り付けられたんじゃないかと、自分では気にいっています。(^^)

I'm quite happy with this year's Osechi. (^^)

皆様にとって素晴らしい2015年となりますように！

夏の野菜たち Summer Vegetables

家庭菜園で野菜作りの上手なお友達がいます。

時々声をかけてくださるので、お野菜をいただきに行くのですが、

先日もこんなにたくさん収穫してきましたよ。＼(^o^)／

One of my friends is a good home gardener.

He sometimes invites me to his garden, and I get to pick the vegetables. ＼(^o^)／

These are what I got the other day, fresh, right from the garden.

きゅうりにはまだ花がついたまま　Cucumbers still have flowers on the end.

オクラやミョウガもぷりぷりです。

The green ones are Okra and the reddish ones are Myoga.

オクラが畑になっているのを初めて見ました。

オクラはとんがった方を上にまっすぐぴんとなるんですね。

黄色い立派な花もきれいでした。

（カメラ持っていけばよかった。）

Did you know that Okra plants have pretty yellow flowers?

I saw them at his garden.  (I should have brought my camera with me.)

Myoga (Japanese ginger) have very distinctive flavor.

 I use them as a garnish for miso soup and sunomono (sort of sweet sour cucumber salad). 

ゴーヤもたくさん。

ゴーヤの苦み癖になりますね。

These are goya (bitter melon).

As you can easily imagine, it's very bitter.

But once you get used to it, you kind of get to like its bitterness.

I usually stir-fry it with pork, tofu, and eggs.

シソもとっても柔らか。

シソの香りは私の一番好きな香り。

Shiso leaves have such a wonderful fragrance.

I would say it's my most favorite smell.

新鮮野菜で暑さを乗り切れるよう頑張っています！

掛川織の花ござ Kakegawa-ori Rush Grass Rug

六月になりました。こちらも梅雨入りです。

It's June.  Rainy season has just arrived in Tokyo area.

昨日から雨、雨、雨…

It's raining, raining, raining...

 庭のブランコも濡れるばかり。　I can't sit on my swing. (T_T)

紫陽花は元気です。　But hydrangeas seem happy.

梅の実も大きくなっています。Ume plums are getting bigger.

以前はこの時期家も涼やかに衣替えしたものです。

私の故郷松山の道後温泉は今でも六月に入るとすだれを掛けて、それが夏の風物詩となっています。

June is also time to prepare our house for summer.

For example, Dogo Onsen (hot springs) in my hometown Matsuyama hangs Sudare (reed shades) outside their windows.

私はたいして何もしませんが、唯一やっているのがカーペットを変えること。

冬の絨毯をしまって、花ござを敷きます。

I don't do much, but every June, I put away my heavy, thick rug in our living room and spread out this light, summer rug.

福岡の掛川織の花ござを気にいって使っています。

ひんやり、さらっとしていて気持ちいいんです。

It is Kakegawa-ori rug from Fukuoka, Kyushu, made of Igusa (soft rush grass) just like tatami mat.

It's a great summer rug; feels cool against your warm body and  doesn't stick to your skin even when you are sweating.

模様も気に入っています。　And it's pretty, too.

もう10年くらい使っていますが、丈夫なのかまだしっかりしています。

今でも出してくると、いぐさの香りがかすかにぷんとするんですよ。

Though mine is almost ten years old, when I was taking it out from the storage, I could still sense its grassy Igusa scent.

ここでごろごろお昼寝をすると、夏って感じです。　

Taking a nap here in a hot afternoon... that's my summer.

消費税アップの前に、若狭塗箸 Wakasa-nuri Chopsticks

いよいよ明日、4月1日に消費税が上がります。

テレビや新聞によれば、増税前のお買い物でスーパーもデパートも大賑わいだったとか。

The consumption tax in Japan will rise from current 5 percent to 8 percent tomorrow, April 1.

Naturally, people did a lot of shopping before the tax increase.

Some bought a house, or a car.

Some bought stock food and daily goods.

私も勢いでいろいろ購入。赤ワインもまとめ買いしました。

Me?

I bought a box of Bordeaux wine. 

ベルーナのボルドー金賞赤ワインセット。お値段が安いのにはずれがないので気にいってます。

それからなぜかお箸も。

若狭塗箸　Wakasa-nuri chopsticks

単に前から欲しかったものを、この際だからと買っちゃっただけですけれど。(^_^;)

NHKの朝ドラ「ちりとてちん」をご記憶でしょうか？大好きでした。

主人公のお父さんが若狭塗箸の職人で、以来ちょっと憧れていたんです。

Obviously, here, the consumption tax rise was just an excuse.　(^_^;)

I've always wanted them.

And since everyone seemed to be shopping madly,  I was like, "Why not?"

若狭塗箸は福井県小浜市の名産品で400年の歴史があります。

貝殻や卵の殻などなんでもないもので美しい模様ができあがっていく、というのがいいでしょう？(^^)

何重にも漆を塗っては砥石をかけ、ものによっては完成までに1年半もかかるものもあるのだとか。

Wakasa-nuri is from Obama City in Fukui Prefecture, and has the history of 400 years.

I can't explain the detail, but they make this beauty out of small things such as sea shells and egg shells.

They apply many layers of Japanese lacquer and burnish them over and over.

Sometimes it takes more than 18 months to finish. 

なかにはとても高価なものもありますが、私のはそうはいってもたいしたことはありません。でもとてもきれいです。

毎日使うものなので、とても喜んでいます。

Some can be very expensive, but mine isn't that expensive.
But I think it's so pretty.

Chopsticks are something we use every day, so I'm very happy I got these. ＼(^o^)／

うまく写真が撮れませんでしたが、夫のほうは一見シンプル。でも貝の色が上品でいろいろな色に光ってとてもきれいなんですよ。

 This photo isn't great, but this is very pretty, too. The seashell particles shine in every color.

ところで、若狭塗箸について調べていたときに、せいわという若狭塗箸の会社の作った手作り感たっぷりの「正しいお箸の持ち方」というビデオを見つけました。

By the way, while I was checking about Wakasa-nuri chopsticks, I found this video by a chopstick company Seiwa in Obama city. 

It shows how to learn using chopsticks properly.

It's in Japanese but I think you can watch and understand.

The point is 

1)First, practice with one chopstick. Hold it with your thumb and two fingers.  Restrain the other two fingers and move the chopstick up and down.  

    2)Then, hold the other chopstick, which shouldn't move a bit.

スズムシ Suzumushi, Japanese bell cricket

７月半ばに友人からスズムシをもらいました。

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine gave me Suzumushi (bell crickets).

In Japanese, "Suzu" means a small round bell, and "mushi," a bug.

So, you can imagine, Suzumushi is known for it's beautiful song.

スズムシ、マツムシ、コオロギなど虫の声に風流を感じるのは、世界的には珍しいことのようですね。

でも日本ではすでに平安時代、貴族がかごに入れて楽しんでいたそうですし、そういえば源氏物語の第38帖は「鈴虫」でしたね。

江戸時代になると、虫売りという商売があったくらいですから、庶民にも広く愛されていたんでしょう。

Suzumushi, Matsumushi and Korogi are the insects that sing beautifully in autumn.

From ancient times, Japanese people admired their songs.

Heian noblemen already started keeping them in a cage.

The chapter 38 of "The Tale of Genji" is titled "Suzumushi." 

Later, in the Edo period, common people were buying them at stalls.  

Even today, the conversation like this is very common around September in Japan.

"Oh, bugs are singing."

"Yes, it's autumn already."

でも私がスズムシを飼うのはこれが初めて。

ファーブル先生よろしく、毎日観察して楽しんでいます。(^_^)v

But this is the first time I got my Suzumushi.

So, this little Fabre is enjoying studying them. (^_^)v

最後の脱皮を終えて成虫になったばかり。まだ羽根が白いです。

Though it's not autumn yet, they started singing already. 

日増しに上手になってきています。

Their songs are getting better and better every day.
