Christmas Ornaments

Season's Greetings!

I hope everyone is enjoying this special season,
filled with love and hope.

In Japan, many people decorate  Christmas trees and enjoy Christmas spirits.
But we usually put it away before New Year's Day.
Today, I took pictures of my favorite ornaments
before I put my Christmas tree away.

Let me introduce them.

The new comer this year, from our family trip to Saipan

This is also from Sweden.

Perhaps from Mexico...?

Made by my children when they were little

Without the Christmas tree, our living room feels a little larger.
Now, to welcome the God of the New Year,
I have to clean my house thoroughly.

Have a Happy New Year!

Zojojito Akabane

This is the picture of the Five Storied Pagoda of Zojoji and the Akabane Bridge beyond it.
It's a beautiful picture, with the red pagoda and the blue stream.

The Five Storied Pagoda was  burned down during the WWⅡ.

But the Akabane Bridge is still there, well, if I may say so.

It's under the highway.

That beautiful blue stream is now...

残念!

sigh...

But there was a  monument by the bridge.

Now let's explore the Zojoji temple.
It is quite big.

This is Daimon, the first gate.

This is Sangedatsumon.
Built in 1622, it was one of a few survivors of the war.

Right behind the Sangedatsumon, there stand a big Himalayan cedar tree and a sign.
The sign says that the tree was planted by the 18th US president General Grant in 1879.
It has grown so tall!

This is Daiden, the main hall, and Tokyo Tower behind it.

I liked these Jizo.
There were so many of them.
The pinwheels were spinning gently.

Even today, Zojoji is very big.
But in Edo era, as the family temple of the Tokugawa Shoguns, it  owned vast land.

These were all part of Zojoji at that time...

Shiba Park

The Prince Hotel Tokyo

The Prince Park Tower Tokyo

According to the Edo map, the Five Storied Pagoda was somewhere near The Prince Park Tower today.

So, I climbed up the hill in Shiba Park and took the picture of the tower .

I think I was looking at the right direction.
But it sure looks different, doesn't it?

Shibashinmei Zojoji

This is the approach to Zojoji Temple.
The small red gate on the left  is Daimon, the first gate to the temple.

This is Daimon.
It's quite big and the street is very busy.

Along with Kan-eiji Temple in Ueno, Zojoji Temple was the family temple of Tokugawa family.
There used to be great mausoleums of six Shoguns, but they were almost completely burned down during WWⅡ.

Now their tombs are gathered in one place, at the back of the temple.

Usually it's not open to the public, but until January 31, 2012, we can go inside.
I was lucky!

This is the tomb of the second Shogun Hidetada and his wife Go.

As a family temple of Shoguns, Zojoji enjoyed the prosperity.
In Edo era, there were more than 3000 monks in the temple.
At 4PM every day, those monks went out to ask for alms.

In the Hiroshige's picture, you can see those monks and a group of worshipers.
Look at the beautiful sunset sky!

Also, on the right are Shiba Daijingu Shrine, or Shiba Myojin.
It's still there.

Now, let's go back to Hiroshige's  picture.
Can I get it right?

I got Daimon right.
But Shiba Daijingu Shrine was behind many buildings.

Hakusasonso Villa in Kyoto

I was in Kyoto again this month, mainly to visit Kyoto Imperial Palace.
Usually we can't go in the palace, but for a few days each in spring and autumn, it is open to the public..

It was magnifcent.

But as you can see, there were so many people......

I went to Kiyomizudera Temple.

It's dynamic..

But as you can see, there were so many people......as usual.

I was quite tired......

Then I found a very tranquil garden near Ginkakuji Temple.

It's called Hakusasonso.

It was a house of  a Japanese-style artist Hashimoto Kansetsu(1883-1945).

"Living in a city, but as if living in a deep mountain."
Seeking this ideal, Kansetsu kept working on  his garden for over 30 years.

A little tea-house on the pond.

There were stone Rakan figures among bamboo trees.
Is there any you like?

Thinking hard

meditating all day

Peekaboo!

I like him.

While I was at Hakusasonso, I think I was the only visitor.
I felt lucky and enjoyed the beautiful garden.
If you need a quiet time in Kyoto, this might be a nice  place to visit.

Autumn Tastes

One of my friends gave me these beautiful chestnuts.
Usually, at supermarkets, chestnuts are sold without the prickly burs.
She said she bought them at a small countryside shop.
They are really prickly and they hurt!
Why do they have to be so prickly?

I hope I'm not that prickly!!

For a few days, I admired them on our table.
Then, I made Kuri Gohan (chestnuts rice).
I usually add  diced sweet potatoes, too.
Yummy!

Another friend of mine gave me many persimmons from his tree.
They are not as big as store-sold persimmons..
They have seeds, not like store-sold persimmons.
But I like them.

They remind me of my old home with a persimmon tree.

It has become quite cold these days.
I hope you are all well.

Tsunohazu Kumano Jyunisha

At the left bottom of the picture, you can see a shrine.
It was called Kumano Junisha Gongensha in the Edo era.
Now, it is called Kumano Shrine.

This area was a popular scenic spot among Edo people.
There were two big ponds and also several waterfalls.
On the picture, you can see some people enjoying the summer breeze over the terraces around the pond.
Peaceful, isn't it?

Now, let's visit Kumano Shrine.
It's not far from the West Exit of Shinjuku station.

I walked through Shinjuku Chuo Park.

Like old days, they have some waterfalls.

This is Kumano Shrine.

I asked the man at the shrine which direction the pond was.
He pointed to...

Oops!
No, pond!
I learned that the pond was buried in 1968.

But anyway, I have to take a picture as close to Hiroshige's picture as possible.
Hiroshige's viewpoint is quite high.
Where can I take the picture...
I looked around...

Oh, that's Tokyo Metropolitan Goverment Building!
They have The Twin Observatories on the 45th floor!
What a brilliant idea!

I walked to the building.
It's magnificent.
And it's free!

A view from the observatory

I enjoyed the panoramic view of Tokyo and had a cup of coffee at the cafe.

And then, back to Hirhoshige's picture.

Well, how does it look??

I got the Kumano Shrine right.
But what a difference!
I couldn't help but sigh...
