Ohina-sama (Hina dolls)

Tomorrow,  March 3rd, is Hinamatsuri (Girls' Day or Doll Festival) in Japan.
It's a festival for girls, wishing for their health and happiness.
It was originally started by Heian aristocrats more than 1000 years ago, and spread among common people in the Edo period.

Families with girls display a set of dolls called Ohina-sama at home and celebrate the day.  Those dolls are often very fancy; they represent Emperor and Empress, their attendants and musicians in Heian costumes.

When I was a girl, my Ohina-sama wasn't so big.
Some of my friends had a fancy set with seven platforms.  On the lower platforms, there were beautiful miniature gimmicks, a table and dishes, a dresser, a drawer, a chest, a palanquin, a carriage, and such.
How I wished I had one like that!  I really wanted to play with those miniature gimmicks.

I heard nowadays smaller ones sell better, because big ones take up too much space.

I have no daughters, so we didn't have Ohina-sama until I inherited one from my in-laws a few years ago.

According to the wooden plate,  this set was made by a traditional doll company Yoshitoku to commemorate the wedding of Prince Akishino and Kiko in 1990.
Prince Akishino is currently the second in line to the throne.

Prince Akishino

Princess Akishino (She is supposed to be holding a fan in her  hands.  Somehow it's missing.(>_<))

Heian noble ladies wore 12 layered kimono.

This doll company Yoshitoku has a long history of 300 years.  They started selling Ohina-sama and other dolls at Asakusabashi in 1711. This is how they looked in the time of Edo.

They are still in business at the same location.
In fact, many doll companies established in the Edo era are still in business in Asakusabashi. So if you are interested in Ohina-sama, Asakusabashi is the best place to see them in Tokyo.

I also have tiny cute Ohina-sama in my genkan (entrance hall.)

Big or small, Ohina-sama always makes me feel happy.
Tomorrow, I'm going to make chirashi-zushi (a kind of sushi) and celebrate my Hinamatsuri.

I think it's blatantly unfair that boys get a public holiday (and never mind its PC new name "Children's Day") and girls don't. Hmph. OK, rant over. ;)

When I was a little girl, I always preferred playing with toy cars and Lego. I had zero interest in dolls.

Now that I'm an old girl, I think dolls are beautiful and I enjoy walking through nearby Asakusabashi to look at the shops.

PS: I love that tiny set in your genkan!

Minoru

Rurousha,
I take it differently. We, girls, get another extra festival all to ourselves, which boys don't.(^_-) (I do understand historically Children's Day in May is Boys' Day and we still display decorations for boys only.) Maybe I am being too optimistic.

It's nice you can walk through Asakusabashi often. Isn't the area very interesting?

Aha! That's how to see the glass is half full rather than half empty! I'm going to steal your approach. ^^

Asakusabashi is a very lekker area. :)

Rurousha,

Steal my approach? My pleasure! (^^)
