View64 Suido-bashi Bridge and Surugadai

One of my favorites! (^^)
The big carp streamers indicate that it's the Boy's Festival, the fifth of May.
Today, the day is called Children's Day, and it's the day for both boys and girls.  But in the time of Edo, it was the day to celebrate boys healthy growth.

Carp streamers were used by commoners.
Do you see red streamers (military streamers called fukinagashi) and vertical nobori banners in the distance?  Those were used by samurai.
The area, Surugadai and beyond, was a samurai district.

The Kanda River flows from right to left.  The bridge we see is Suido-bashi Bridge.
Suido means "aqueduct."
Why was it called "aqueduct bridge"?
Because in the time of Edo, not far from this bridge, there was an "aqueduct" that crossed the river.

But what is the "aqueduct"?  I went to the nearby Tokyo Waterworks Historical Museum to learn about it.

I didn't know about this museum until I did a little research for this post.  But I found it very interesting, especially its Edo Section on the second floor.  I recommend it strongly if you are interested in waterworks system in Edo.

Well, this is how it looked, the aqueduct over the Kanda River.
広重 by Hiroshige

Water flew from left (Koishikawa area) to right. Then, it was guided through conduits made of stone or wood to Edo Castle, and to Kanda and Nihonbashi area.

The museum had a lot of interesting exhibits.
It was fun walking through row houses.

It was amazing Edo had such elaborate water supply and sewerage systems long ago.

(Admission free.  Audio guide is available in English, Korean, Chinese and Japanese for free of charge.)

If you go there, don't forget to go to their beautiful park behind the building.
azaleas
It was fun spinning the big earth!

I found many big tadpoles in a pond!
I hadn't seen one in a long time, so was surprised to see many, in the middle of Tokyo!
Some already had hind legs.

Now, let's go and see Suido-bashi Bridge.

On the way, along the river, I found this stone monument.
It says this is where the aqueduct was.

From there, I looked toward the Suido-bashi bridge.  Yes, I could see it.

Suido-bashi Bridge.

The view from the bridge.

Suido-bashi station is right by the bridge.
so many people!

Now, let's compare then and now.

I got the train! (^^)

By the way, there is a shrine near the Suido-bashi station.
Misaki Inari Shrine

Guess what I found...

carp streamers!!

I was quite happy to find one near Suido-bashi bridge! \(^o^)/

I'm free this morning, so I'm catching up with everybody. (Only this morning. I have to attend a seminar this afternoon/evening. A seminar on a Friday evening?!? Hmph.)

"I recommend it strongly if you are interested in waterworks system in Edo." OK! I think that's me! :D I've heard of the museum, but I never realized it was so interesting. I'll follow your advice.

I'm trying to figure out where that aqueduct stone monument is: kind of halfway between Suidobashi Station and Koishika ... No. Wrong direction. Halfway between Suidobashi and Ochanomizu?

PS: I love carp banners, too! ^^

PPS: Oh, and azaleas.

Rurousha,
The stone monument is situated between Suidobashi and Ochanomizu, closer to Suidobashi.

At the museum, you can see the picture-story show of Tamagawa brothers (in Japanese), the real wooden conduits they excavated while developing the Shiodome area, and much more. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. (^^)

Azaleas are beautiful, aren't they?

Minoru
