Walking in Tsuwano and Taikodani Inari Jinja

We drove from Nichihara to Tsuwano.
On the way, we found a lovely place and stopped our car.

Red-roofed houses at the foot of the mountain, green rice field, and natural meadow ......looked like a scene from old stories!

Soon, we were at Tsuwano.  Known as a little Kyoto in San-in, it has many old buildings along its main street, Tonomachi.

This was the gate to the chief Samurai O-oka's residence.

But inside it was their local government office.

In the channel along Tonomachi street, colorful koi fish were swimming.
Tourists were feeding them well, and the fish were very fat.

There were many nice shops along the street and I enjoyed a little shopping there.

This is a shop with a long history of  300 years.
In old days, "Bundo-ya" used to deal in candles and fragrant hair oil.

Now they have Japanese incense, candles, and  paper.

nice warm atmosphere

A lady at the store was very kind and we enjoyed a little chat with her.
I bought these Pochi bukuro and Kaishi.
Pochi bukuro is a small envelope you put otoshidama (New Year's gift money).
Kaishi is the paper used at tea ceremonies.  But it can be used in many other ways, too.  I'm going to keep it in my bag and use it as a paper napkin, a memo pad, etc.  I might also make  Pochi bukuro by folding it.

We also bought a bottle of Sake and a pair of mugs.
It was fun!

Then we headed for Taikodani Inari Jinja.
It is one of the five biggest Inari Shrine in Japan.

The feudal lord Kamei Norisada built this shrine in 1773, enshrining a share of the spirit from Fushimi Inari Jinja in Kyoto.
This is the only Inari that writes 「稲成」 instead of 「稲荷」, and it's because they wish for 願望成就 (wish fulfillment.)

Like Fushimi Inari Jinja, you go through a lot of red torii.

But it wasn't that hard.
Soon we reached the top.

I liked this red and green contrast.

This is the main shrine.
It has a big Shimenawa (sacred straw festoon)

These foxes were guarding the main shrine.

This little shrine was packed with many fox statues.

From there, I enjoyed the view of the Tsuwano Town.
It was quite lovely.

Ayu Cuisine and a Taxi Driver

Takatsu River that runs through Nichihara is famous for wild Ayu.
Ayu, with its distinctive sweet flavor and nice aromas, is much-prized delicacy in summer.

So on the second night at Nichihara, we went to a traditional Japanese restaurant "Mikadoya" to enjoy its famous Ayu cuisine.

Though it is in a small town, Mikadoya has a classy atmosphere.  Women in kimono welcomed us at the entrance and took us to a private dining room.
I liked the woodwork.

And we had a pleasant time there.
We enjoyed the food, sake, and their wonderful hospitality.

It was surprising to know there are so many ways to enjoy Ayu.
(The only way I had eaten Ayu was grilling it with salt.)

Let me show you what we had...

Rare delicacy, Uruka (soft roe)

Ayu no Arai (Sashimi washed in cold water)

Ayu in white miso soup
When you open its black lid, you see this beautiful gold and red inside.
Such a treat for your eyes.

Cold Sake "Uijin" from Tsuwano
Sake + ceder=a big smile!

Grilled Ayu with salt
Wow! Two for each of us?
Eggplant cooked with Uruka

Ayu cooked with Miso in aluminium foil
Oops!  I ate it before I took its picture!

Vinegared Ayu

Ayu rice

Sweet plum, no Ayu in this(^^)

In total, they said I had about 8 or 9 Ayu!
I'm surprised I ate that many, but it was that delicious.
It was quite an experience!

After the dinner, we asked for a taxi to go back to where we were staying, a pension on top of a mountain.
The taxi driver had to drive up the dark narrow winding road.
He was a friendly driver.  We enjoyed, half drunk, listening to him talking about bores in the mountain.  Then, I  saw something I couldn't understand.  He suddenly stopped the meter.  Why did he stop the meter, I wondered.  But he just kept driving and talking about the bores.  And finally, when he stopped the car in front of the pension, he read the meter and asked for that price.
I still don't know why he under-charged us.
But I was touched by his subtle kindness.

\(^o^)/

At Nichihara, you can find good Ayu, and also you can find good hearts.
\(^o^)/

What I thought at Nichihara

We visited Tsuwano, a town known as a little Kyoto in San-in.
It's a famous tourist site, but what we wanted to do there was somewhat different from the other tourists.
We wanted to visit Nichihara-town (actually there is no town called Nichihara any more, as it was merged into Tsuwano town in 2005.)
It's about 10 kilometers northeast of the Tsuwano Station.

Why did we want to visit there?
Because my husband spent three years there when he was a school kid, and kept telling me all these years how beautiful it was, what a wonderful childhood he had there.

So, we went there.
My husband was very excited.  We went to HIS elementary school, HIS power plant, and looked for HIS playground.  I wasn't so excited, in the beginning.  But soon, I realized what a wonderful treasure this place holds.

This is how it looks from a hilltop.

Lovely, isn't it?  Most of the houses are roofed with red roof tiles called Sekishu-gawara.
Sekishu-gawara is made in nearby towns.  It is resistant to cold, so it is good for the area where they have much snow in winter.
石州瓦のおうち a house with Sekishu-gawara

Nichihara is where the Tsuwano River and the Takatsu River meet.  Takatsu River is one of the cleanest rivers in Japan.

Beautiful water
Children were swimming.

You can catch ayu (sweetfish), the fish that live only in the cleanest water.

People were friendly.
Everyone we met there, even middle school students, smiled at us and greeted us.
In the end, I was greeting everyone.

And the stars!
Nichihara is one of the best places to watch stars in Honshu.
It has this observatory, equipped with 75 cm telescope.

Nichihara Astronomical Observatory

We stayed two nights at the pension next to the observatory.
Pension Hokutosei

On our first night, we had a barbecue in the front yard.
The sun set and the sky grew darker.

After dinner, we walked to the observatory.

For about two hours, they showed us the moon, Saturn, Neptune, and many stars. I couldn't remember the names of the stars or the constellations, but they were beautiful and I really enjoyed it.

A star that looked like a diamond

The sky was full of stars.  I could see the milky way over my head.
I saw several shooting stars, too.

It was a beautiful, beautiful night (except that mosquito buzzing around my ear.  brrr).

And I learned something new about my husband.  He once was a happy boy who swam and went fishing in the river, marched in the woods, and gazed at the starry skies.
How fortunate he was!

I hope many children spend their childhood that way.
Or at least, I hope they are making such fond memories during this summer vacation.
