Easy Chirashi-zushi with Sushi-taro

My mother will make a face if she sees this post.
She would say, "Sushi-taro?  I have never used such things!"
She makes the best chirashi-zushi in the world and always makes it from scratch.
She always tells me, "Don't try to make it in one day.  Always prepare things in advance."

But this unorganized daughter of hers can't always do it.
And Sushi-taro comes to the rescue.  And it's not that bad either!

(^_^;)

If you have Asian grocery stores in your country, you might find this Sushi-taro. (Or the other recommendation, Mizkan Gomoku Chirashi.)
So, I decided to show you how to make Chirashi-zushi with it.
It might be fun to try it at your home.
Believe me, it's so easy!

You'll find two kinds of pouches inside.

The bigger pouch is a sushi mix, each for two servings.
According to the instruction, you are to cook 270 cc of rice per pouch, 540 cc for the whole set.
But I prefer lighter taste, so I cooked 700 cc of rice, with a bit less water than usual.

The smaller pouch contains condiments, nori strips and sesame seeds.

Roughly put, you make sushi rice by mixing the things in the bigger pouch with cooked rice, and sprinkle the condiments above.
But we usually add things on top to make it fancier.

I prepared ...

salmon and tuna sashimi, shrimps and ikura.
Maybe you can use smoked salmon instead.

Also, I wanted something green.

I boiled Kakina, some leafy vegetable, and chopped it.
Chopped cucumber would be a good substitute?

And for me Kinshi-tamago is a must.
Kinshi-tamago (錦糸卵) literally means "brocade-thread-egg."
This is how you make it.

Beat eggs and add some sugar. (I used 3 eggs and maybe 1 ts of sugar.)
To make it softer, I added some starch mixed with water. (optional)

oil your pan

Spread the egg mixture thin on the pan and cook over low heat.

Take it out of the pan.
Repeat this until you get many thin sheets of fried eggs.

Once they cool, roll them,

 cut them,

and you are done!

When everything is ready, you make sushi rice.
Prepare a big bowl.  This is called Hanbo, and it is ideal because it absorbs excess moisture.
But any big bowl will do.

Put rice in.

Add the sushi mix.

Try to make it fluffy, not so sticky.

And it's done!

Pour the rice on a shallow bowl and add what you have prepared on top.
(Be careful with anything raw.  Don't put it on rice while the rice is still warm.)

Enjoy! \(^o^)/

It will be great for a party!

It's a food post! :D

I don't eat much seafood, but despite that, I love the colour combination in your last photo. That's the thing with Japanese food: it not only tastes good, it looks so beautiful! Well, OK, except monjayaki! :p

I'm a very bad cook. I wish I were as good as your mother and you!

That's too much work for me. I'll stick with the store bought ones. I used to eat chirashi sushi almost every day. These days I don't have time for it at work. Thanks for the tips though. If I decide to try it out, I will. ^^

Rurousha,
Yup, it's a food post!(*^_^*)

I'm not so happy with my last photo. I was going to make it fancier, but my husband came home and started helping me in the kitchen. So, it was done, quick!

But anyhow、thanks for your kind comment.

Monjayaki! It doesn't look pretty at all, does it? I prefer Okonomiyaki.

Dru,
OK, forget about Kinshi-tamago. You can buy Tamagoyaki at the sashimi section of a supermarket, slice it and put it on.

Then, you can have rich Kaisen Chirashi with all your favorite sashimi on, in 5 minutes. \(^o^)/

Minoru
