Setsubun

Yesterday was Setsubun Day in Japan.
Setsubun is the day before the beginning of spring according  to  the Japanese calendar.

In old days, it was believed that the evil haunt on Setsubun Day.
So, in order to drive the evil away, we throw roasted beans and yell,
"In with fortune!  Out with the evil!"

It is a long tradition.  This is a work of  Katsushika Hokusai in Edo era, "Setsubun no Oni."

When my children were small, we used to enjoy this tradition, yelling and throwing beans like the man above.

But now, it has become such a small deal.
Yesterday, I just threw a few beans from a partly opened window and muttered "In with fortunes.  Out with the evil."

Then, I ate roasted beans, one for each year of my life.

There is  a new trend for Setsubun, called Eho-maki.
You are to eat a long, non-cut Sushi roll, facing a certain, so-called lucky direction.   The lucky direction is different each year, and for this year, it was north-northwest.

It has become popular in these several years.  It is totally promoted on a commercial basis, I would say.  On Setsubun day, every store is trying to sell anything roll-y, Sushi roll, cake roll,  or even anything long, sausages, hot-dog and etc.

I think it is so silly.

But for several years now, I buy Sushi rolls for Setsubun night.  I kind of like the idea.  It saves me one-meal-cooking!
