View67 Sotosakurada Benkei-bori moat Koji-machi

Hiroshige is standing just outside the Sakurada-mon Gate of the Edo castle and looking west.
The gate is famous for "the Sakuradamon incident."
On March 3, 1860, the Japanese Chief Minister Tairo Ii Naosuke was heading for the Edo castle, and just outside this gate, he was assassinated by a group of samurais.
Hiroshige painted this picture in 1856, four years prior to the incident.

Do you see the big red gate?
That was where Tairo Ii lived.

His residence is now a part of the Diet Front Garden.
The park on the right was Ii's residence.

In the park, there is Kensei Kinenkan where you can learn the history of Japanese parliamentary system.

A lot of trees.
A tall clock tower

If you look carefully at Hiroshige's picture, you can see a red draw well in front of Ii's residence.

It was drawn here, too.

Called Sakura-ga-I, it produced famous good water, and anyone could drink it.
The well is still there, but I don't think you can drink it.

Now, let's go and see Sakurada-mon gate.
Sakuradamon Gate

Just like many other gates around Edo castle, it has a dual structure consisting of Korai gate on the outside and the Watariyagura Gate on the inside with a square in-between.  Imagine you are attacking Edo castle with thousands of your men.  They have to enter the small Korai Gate and turn at a right angle and go through Watariyagura Gate.   The force will be discouraged. I think this is very smart!

OK.  So like Hiroshige, I stood just outside of the Sakuradamon Gate and looked west.
How does it look now?

I grinned, because it looked exactly the same!
Can you see the clock tower at Ii's residence?
So, Hiroshige's drawing was quite accurate.

This is the first view that still looks almost exactly the same, isn't it?!

Very happy too! (^0^)

Yes, I was very pleased.(^_^)

And also I was surprised how accurate Hiroshige's drawing was. He wasn't always that way, like his exaggerated big Mt.Fuji.

I'm thankful he just painted what he saw here.
