Awa Odori Dance Festival in Tokushima

City of Tokushima holds Awa Odori Dance Festival  from 12 to 15 August every year.
It's one of the biggest dance festivals in Japan and attracts more than 1.3 million people in four days.

This summer, while visiting my hometown Matsuyama, I decided to go and see the festival, for the first time.

typical Awa Odori Dancer

When we got to the city, it was jammed with dancers and spectators.
At first, I was at a loss.  I wasn't well prepared.  I didn't know where to go.

This is what I learned afterward.
During the festival, the city sets six dancing streets called Enbujo.
Four of them require tickets, which you can (and really should) buy in advance.
The other two Enbujo are free.

We didn't have tickets.  So, we headed for the free Enbujo.
But soon, we learned that they are dancing everywhere!

This was my first encouter with the energetic rhythm.

Their dance needs strong quadriceps!

Some dance on the bridge,

and some at an intersection.

These are the performance at the free Enbujo.

This little boy was sooooo cute!

Look at his dance. (*^_^*)

There is a famous chant in Awa Odori, which goes,

Odoru Ahou-ni  (Dancers are fools)
Miru Ahou  (Onlookers are fools)
Onaji Aho-nara  (Anyway, we are all fools)
Odoranya son-son!  (Then, it's better dancing!)

So, if you want to dance, you can join a group called Niwaka-ren.
They gather at 18:30 and 20:30 every day at two designated places.
(I really wanted to join, but didn't have enough time. )

Also, I learned later that if you have a seat at Minamiuchimachi Enbujo (one of the paid Enbujo), you can see a great spectacle called So-odori at 22:00.
You can watch it here.

I really hope I can visit the festival again.  But next time, I'm going to plan early, have a hotel reservation and a ticket to Minamiuchimachi Enbujo. (^^)

Looks like a fun time. I used to want to go to this festival but it is no longer that high up on my list. Thanks for the fun videos. ^^

Dru,
It was a lot of fun! Listening to those drums and bells, I was filled with strong energy, my stomach with cold beer and Tokushima (^^)

What I want to do next time is to go to Naruto and see the whirlpool and Otsuka Art Museum, then go to Tokushima and dance, dance, dance. But it must be very hard and expensive to get a hotel room in Tokushima during the festival. I'll see.

Naruto is a lot of fun. I was there about 4 years ago. I took a boat out to the whirlpools and went up onto Naruto Ohashi. They have a special observatory. I jumped on one of the windows that point down to the sea below and scared a nice couple. ^^

I hope to hear about it in the future.

Dru,

You have already traveled so much in Japan, haven't you?

OK, I'll remember about the observatory window, where you scared NICE people. ^m^

I'm finally arriving many days late, because I'm having a hectic August. (+_+)

I love this post, and that little boy? I want to abduct him! He may very well be the cutest thing I've ever seen in Japan. ^^

The best thing about this post, though, is that chant about the fools. I agree absolutely!

Thanks, Merry Witch! I enjoyed this one.

Rurousha,
Isn't that little boy adorable? (^_-)-☆

And the chant...I like it, too. Ask your Hero and he might be able to chant it for you with its special nice rhythm, "Era-yaccha, era-yaccha, yoi, yoi, yoi, yoi. Odoru ahou-ni Miru ahou...." It will instantly make you want to dance.(^^)

By the way, at the festival, I even so people walking with African drums. I'm curious what kind of performance they did. So much were going on there.

Please take care. They are making you work too hard. (>_<)

Minoru

Minoru
