View 115 Bikuni Bridge in Snow

It's so hot in Tokyo these days.
So how about a snow-covered winter view for a good change?(^^)

The bridge a man is about to cross is Bikuni Bridge.
Bikuni means a Buddhist nun, but in the time of Edo, it also meant low class prostitutes dressed like nuns.
They called this bridge Bikuni because there were a few unlicensed brothels near this bridge.

It's a cold winter night.
But don't worry.
Hiroshige has given you three choices to warm yourself.
How about bore stew at the shop on the left?
The big sign says "Yama Kujira (Mountain Whale)" which means wild bore.
Or, you could call out to the peddler for hot oden and warm sake.
Or, you could buy a roasted sweet potato at the stall on the right.
Which would you like? (^^)

Anyway, this is near Ginza 1 Chome today.
Bikuni Bridge passed over the mouth of the Kyobashi River at the point where it joined with the Outer Moat.
It was a man-made river, and after the WWⅡ, it was filled in.
Today, the highway runs along its course overhead.

Kyobashi River was running from right to left.

Ibaraki Marche also under the highway (It's an antenna shop run by Ibaraki Prefecture .)

Hiroshige is probably standing in front of Yaesu Fujiya Hotel today and looking south.

If you look west, you are looking at this.
Tokyo Kokusai Forum in the distance

Sotobori Dori Street is busy with traffic.
The area looks totally different from Hiroshige's time.

I stood in front of the hotel and looked toward south.
How does the place look now?

It has completely changed.
But guess what I've found nearby. (^_-)

I saw several of these in the area.
Maybe at night, you can eat ramen, or oden at these stands.
I don't have a courage to try it, but still, I felt very happy finding them.
\(^o^)/

I first read "Bikini Bridge". "Hiroshige painted a bikini?!" I thought.

Two questions.

1) Why did the prostitutes dress as nuns?

2) What did passersby think of the strange woman taking strange photos of overhead passes in Yaesu? :D

PS: Roast sweet potato for me, please!

Rurousha,
Bikini Bridge? That would have been even more popular. (^_-)

You asked me two very interesting questions.
I'm not an expert, but from what I read, this is how it began. Bikuni were the nuns who went around preaching. Then, they were invited to a party, then, to the bed. (@_@)

The second question? The more embarrassing was when I was taking that old stall. To make it even more odd, I was a bit dressed up for a Marunouchi dinner that day. But who cares! I'm so determined!!

Wow, this looks great. Right near my office too! Seeing these photos and Hiroshige's print made me a little sad. It's so busy and noisy there at all hours.

I think the food stalls are there because there are a lot of pubs, restaurants, etc. all over. Good place to store them before moving out and setting up shop at Tokyo Station. ^^

Merry Witch said...

Dru,
So, that's where you work, in the very center of Tokyo!

I was surprised they still have food stalls around Tokyo Station. Where can they set up their shops in that tidy-upped, brightly-lit area? But it's good they still there. (^^)
Have you ever tried one of them? If you have, I would like to read your report on it.

Dru said...

No, I haven't tried them. I am always worried about outdoor food stalls. Where do they wash their hands? Festivals... I try to ignore that problem but at these places, I don't know.

I'll try to see them if I can, but I rarely walk that way at night. I'm actually closer to Yurakucho, but if I'm ever there, I'll let you know.

Merry Witch said...

Dru,
I don't eat at those places, either.
But I have often seen it in TV drama, salaryman having Sake and pouring their heart out at these outdoor food stalls. So, I have a nostalgic yearning for it.

Yes, if you happen to see one of them. I will patiently wait for your report. (^^)
