Ueno Mountain, Matsu of the Moon

first posted on September 18

This is a very dynamic piece.
This Japanese pine tree was called "Matsu of the Moon" because of the unique circular branch.
This tree was on the last picture, Veiw 11, too.
Here is that picture again.
It's the tree on the far left.

Shinobazuno-Ike Pond was famous for its lotus flowers and attracted many people of Edo.
And it still is.

In the middle of the pond, there is a small island called Nakajima.
And on that island, Benzaiten Shrine stands.
That's the small red shrine at the lower right of the picture, View 90.
It is an island, but is connected by a bridge (as shown in View 11).

Benzaiten Shrine was burnt down during the WWⅡ,and was reconstructed in 1958.
To be admired from all around Shinobazuno-ike Pond, it has the shape of octagon.

"Matsu of the Moon" was broken down by a typoon about 150 years ago.
Well, that couldn't be helped.

Then, where shall I take the picture for today's piece?
Benzaiten Shrine, Shinobazuno-ike Pond, and towns beyond that...
And the tree.
Matsu would be wonderful.

I looked around.
It was so hot!

I tried, but couldn't find a pine tree.
Could be better.
But it can't always be as good as I hope.
Well, next time...
See you then.

Edit August 2013  Moon Pine was replanted in autumn 2012.  Please read about it here.
